Wescott
Family
Photo Album
Unless otherwise noted, all photographs
are owned by Mr. & Mrs. Talmadge Spence, Jr. and are submitted by Sloan
(Spence) Mason. Posted here with kind
permission.
The Spence family suspected that these two glass plate negatives are of John Wescott & his wife, Lovey (Tillett) Wescott, but no proof has yet been found--they could be from the Spence side of the family. Glass plates were the first base for photographic negatives. In use from the 1850s through the 1920s, they were used by both amateur and professional photographers. There are two types of glass negatives, wet collodion negatives and dry plate negatives. Wet collodion negatives were introduced in the United States about 1855. They are distinguished by wavy lines along the edges of plates because they were hand coated by photographers. Silver gelatin dry plate negatives replaced wet collodion negatives in the late 1880s and remained in use until the 1920s. Dry plate negatives were more convenient for photographers because they could purchase prepared plates from manufacturers in standard sizes. Determining if plates are wet collodion negatives or dry plate negatives is useful for dating the images.
UPDATE: In 2016 the two glass plate negatives below were submitted as possible paintings of John Wescott and his wife Lovey, however, on New Year's Day 2017 Marlee Logan was visiting with her aunt, Theresa Bowler Wescott, and happened to see actual pictures of these same two people depicted on the glass plates. Theresa inherited them when her parents, Albert Read Wescott, Jr. & his wife, Marguerite Stephanz Wescott, passed away. According to what's written on the back of each of the new-found pictures, they are Davenport's, not Wescott's as originally thought. Check out Marlee's blog!
We don't believe that they are 4th or 5th generations from Albert Read Wescott, Sr. but closer, however, we still do not know EXACTLY who they are. As you can see below from the lineage that we've been able to come up with, the Davenport family does tie in with the Wescott family. If anyone can identify this couple please send me an e-mail.
Albert Read Wescott, Sr. (1888-1976) was the son of John Thomas Wescott (1853-1940) & Martha Ann Chadwick (1865-1936).
Martha Ann Chadwick was the daughter of Wm. Davenport Chadwick/Chaddic (1834-1882) & Lurana J. O'Neal (1828-1882).
Wm. Davenport Chadwick/Chaddic was the son of William West Chadwick (1802-1878) and Emily Davenport (1806-1879).
Mariah was the daughter of Isaac Davenport, Jr. (1753-1816) and Elizabeth Owens (1750-1844).

John Wescott |
Lovey Davis (Tillett) Wescott |
John Wescott was born in Currituck Co., NC on Nov. 14, 1824 & died in Manteo, Dare Co. on Nov. 10, 1884. He was the son of Barbary (Midyett) Dough Westcoate who is found in the 1830 Currituck census as head of house, in the 1840 Currituck census as head of house and the same Barbary Waiscot who is found in the 1850 Currituck census with her son and daughter-in-law, John & Lovey Wescott, living next door with their 10 month old baby girl, Mary. From an 1809 divorce proceeding we know that Barbara was first married to Ambrose N. Dough, a mariner, in 1802 when she was just 15 years old. The divorce was not granted at that time. Barbara, the daughter of Thomas Midyett & Miriam Baum, married John Weskit in 1826 so Ambrose Dough was probably dead by Feb. 1826. John Wescott died before 1830 so their marriage was short lived. When Thomas Midyett's estate was settled in 1797 Barbara was given "761/2 acres joining the land of Joseph Midyett, Samuel Midyett and the Sound." This same 76 acres is mentioned in the divorce proceeding which follows. Source: N.C. Genealogical Society Journal; Aug. 1995; pgs. 259-260 - "Divorces & Separations from Petitions to the N.C. General Assembly from 1779"Session of 1809 (Nov-Dec) Dough, Ambrose N. & Wife, Barbara Memorial of Ambrose N. Dough of Currituck Co., N.C., mariner, sheweth that he intermarried Barbara Midgett of Roanoke Island in the county aforesaid in the year 1802. At that time, your memorialist was at the age of 18 and the said Barbara was in her 15th year. They cohabitated with each other about 2 years and 4 months, when during your memorialist's absence in his seafaring occupation, he discovered that his wife had proved faithless and cohabitated with a certain John Wescott. She has since openly lived and cohabitated with this man and has 2 children by the said Wescott, but some by your memorialist. At the time of their marriage, said Barbara was seized and possessed of 76 acres of land which your memorialist improved as far as he could. He desires an amicable separation from his wife and prays for a suitable relief. The committee to whom was referred the following [petition from Ambrose N. Dough] praying for a divorce from bonds of matrimony are of opinion that it is inexpedient to grant the relief prayed for and recommend that the same be rejected. Read and concurred with by Senate & House, 19 Dec. 1809. John and Lovey are found in Currituck Co. in the 1860 census as Wescutt's & then in the newly formed county of Dare in 1870 & 1880. They are both buried in the Wescott Cemetery at the Manteo Airport. In David Stick's book, The Outer Banks of North Carolina, he makes the following statement--"In 1870, when Dare County was formed from parts of Currituck, Hyde, and Tyrrell, there still were no regular towns on Roanoke Island. A fairly extensive settlement on the southern part of the island was known as "the lower end" and another community to the north was known as "the upper end." However, a site for the county seat of the new county was selected in the middle of the island on the eastern shore facing Shallowbag Bay. The new commissioners first met there April 4, 1870, two weeks later picked out a "site for the court house," and accepted a donation of one acre of land for the purpose from John Wescott." |
Lovey Davis Tillett, daughter of Thomas R. Tillett and Mary "Polly" (Johnson) Tillett, was born in Currituck Co. on Sept. 24, 1831 & died May 6, 1902 at Poyner's Hill in Currituck Co. By 1900 Lovey was living with her son, O'Jennings Wescott. She was age 67, widowed and had 10 children but only 6 of them were living by 1900. Seven of the 10 children are accounted for in the Wescott Bible. Lovey's obituary appeared in The Tar Heel newspaper on Friday, May 16, 1902 and reads: DEATH OF MRS. WESCOTT - Mrs. Lovie D. Wescott, age 70 years, died at the home of her son, Capt. J.T. Wescott at Poyner's Hill on May 6th. She had been a sufferer for many years and had been confined to her bed over 7 weeks. She leaves two daughters, four sons, several grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Capt. J.T. Wescott and his brother, Robt. L. Wescott, and Mr. Grandberry Dowdy took her to Roanoke Island where she was interred in the family burying ground beside her husband. She was a member of the Baptist church. |

Josiah was appointed the Keeper of the New Inlet Lifesaving Station on
April 12, 1894 and died in service on Sept. 23, 1909. The New Inlet Station was plagued during its short existence. It was
authorized in 1882, but was moved twice because of erosion. It had to be
temporarily abandoned during a fierce storm in 1896. The low area in which it
was located was frequently washed over by high tides. In Nov. 1904 an
article appeared
in a Norfolk newspaper that stated a hurricane destroyed the New Inlet
Station when a tidal wave swept the station with the men inside out to sea.
The article did say that lives were lost but there was no mention of names. The station was
decommissioned in 1916. Photo of Josiah Holley Wescott and the
