According to his death certificate Joseph M. Wise was born in Stumpy Point, Tyrrell Co., NC on Mar. 27, 1846 to John "Jack" Wise and Sarah Mann and died in Manteo on Aug. 25, 1915. He married Mary Elizabeth Midgett, daughter of Spencer Midgett and Frances Conner, before 1870. Mary Elizabeth had been previously married to Horatio Allen Drinkwater who was lost at sea in February 1864. Joseph and Mary Elizabeth had 9 children:

   4) Emma T. Wise - Jan. 15, 1875; d. Apr. 16, 1911; married Robert Fletcher Sanderlin
   5) Josephine Bethel "Josie" Wise - b. Mar. 31, 1878; d. July 6, 1948; married Rudolph Johnson
   6) Martha R. "Matte" Wise - b. Nov. 1880; d. ?????; married Charles Douglas Richardson
   7) John Piggott "Johnny" Wise - b. Oct. 20, 1881; d. Dec. 11, 1956; married Mary Susan Beasley
   8) Lillian Mae "Lillie" Wise - b. Jan. 11, 1883; d. Oct. 19, 1958; married 1st Abner Charles Hassell; married 2nd Floyd L. Berry
   9) Edward St. Clair "Eddie" Wise - b. Feb. 11, 1885; d. June 20, 1945; married Christian W. Payne
