{"id":477,"date":"2016-03-02T21:21:49","date_gmt":"2016-03-03T02:21:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ncgenweb.us\/davie\/?page_id=477"},"modified":"2021-10-20T19:08:23","modified_gmt":"2021-10-20T23:08:23","slug":"guardian-accounts-of-davie-county-nc-1846-through-1859","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ncgenweb.us\/davie\/guardian-accounts-of-davie-county-nc-1846-through-1859\/","title":{"rendered":"Guardian Accounts of Davie County, NC, 1846 Through 1859"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From the North Carolina State Archives (CR 033.510.10)<\/p>\n<p>Transcribed by Grace Wight and Marcia Masser<\/p>\n<p>Yates Mill Chapter DAR<\/p>\n<p>Guardians were appointed to be responsible for orphans, children of living parents when the children were receiving money from estates \u2013 or other sources \u2013 such as grandparents.\u00a0 The guardian was in most cases a relative or neighbor.\u00a0 A parent could be appointed as guardian of their own\u00a0 children if they were inheriting from the mother\u2019s estate or from another relative.<\/p>\n<p>Orphans were mostly fatherless; sometimes both parents were deceased.\u00a0 A child fourteen years and older could select their own guardian.\u00a0 This still holds true today.\u00a0 Anyone under twenty-one years of age was called \u201cinfants\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Guardians were required to submit a yearly report to show expenditures for the child\u2019s schooling, medical, clothing, room and board, etc.\u00a0 If the guardian was not doing his job, he could be replaced.\u00a0 In most cases the guardian either moved, died, or was not capable of doing his job.<\/p>\n<p>More can be found on guardian affairs in the <strong>N.C.
