CEDAR GROVE – Kathrine Nicks McDade, 87, of Cedar Grove, died February 9, 2001, at Brookshire Nursing Home. She was the daughter of the late Rev. Samuel F. Nicks and Emma Woods Nicks, of Orange County.
She was an educator and a pioneer of modern elementary education in the Orange County school system for 32 years. She was a longtime member of the Cedar Grove Methodist Church, which she loved so dearly; she served for years as a Sunday school teacher, a Sunday school superintendent, president of the Women’s Society of Christian Service, and in many other capacities. She was a graduate of Roxboro High School and Duke University undergraduate school, receiving her master’s degree in elementary education.
The funeral will be conducted February 12 at 11:00 a.m. at the Walnut Grove United Methodist Church in Walnut Grove by the Rev. Mike Sykes and the Rev. Ira Smith. Burial will follow in the Cedar Grove United Methodist Church cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 48 years, Frank Pucket McDade Sr.; and is survived by a son, F.P. “Mac” McDade Jr., of Cedar Grove; a daughter, Jo McDade Westbrook, of Efland; four grandchildren, R.L. “Reggie” McDade, Cheryl Lynn McDade, Chan Pucket McDade, and Russell Brent Westbrook; and two great-grandchildren, Alexis Catlin McDade and Dakota “Cody” Pucket McDade. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Marianna Nicks Woods and Stella Nicks Bartlett; and two brothers, Samuel F. Nicks and John R. Nicks; she is survived by one brother, the Rev. Robert L. Nicks, of Penny Farms, Fla.
Pallbearers will be Oscar Compton, Ralph Compton, Joey Kirby, David Liner, Don McDade, Dwight Oakley, Wilber Oakley Jr., and Johnny Pope. Honorary pallbearers will be James Bradsher, Thomas Carver, Bill Finley, Bunn Pope, Lathan Tilley, Jimmy Wade, Bo Wells, and Marion Westbrook.
