May 5, 1873 In a letter from the Probate Court, to JESSE HARRIS, ARY HERNDON, SARAH ELLEN
TIMBERLAKE and Dr. G. M. COOLEY, they were commanded to appear before the
Probate Judge, on Monday, May 12, 1873, to give evidence in the matter of the
requested apprenticeship of LUCY HARRIS, an Infant, under 18 years old, to
WILLIAM P. BRIDGERS.
To the Probate Judge of Franklin County having bin subpenead [Subpoenaed] to
attend your court on Monday the 12th inst & my condition is such that it is not
prudent for me to come I rite you this to in form you what I know of the matter
between MR. BRIDGERS & JESSEE HARRIS concerning my sisters ADLINEs daughter LUCY
I have always heard her say that she intended for MRS. S. J. BRIDGER to have
LUCY and that she intended to giver her to her though I have lived with her in
the same house and always heard her say she never wanted her children bound to
anyone but I think MRS. JANE BRIDGES is intitle to LUCY and if I have to say

an orphan, now of the age of Seventeen years who was by an order of the Probate
Judge of said County made on the 31st day of May 1869 has absconded and departed
from the said apprenticeship of the said THOS. C. ARINGTON. You are therefore
commanded to summon the said IDA RICE (now IDA EGERTON by marriage) to
personally appear before the Judge of Probate for the County of Franklin at his
office in the Court-house in the Town of Louisburg on Wednesday the 11th day of
March 1874 there and then to show cause why she should not return to the service
of the said THOS. C. ARINGTON. This she shall in no wise omit under the penalty

Sept. 18, 1878 SAMUEL H. BAILEY petitions the Probate judge that JIM DAVIS, who was 11 years
old when apprenticed to him in 1875, is now age 14, and has left & refuses to
return. JIM is currently living with one ELIZA DAVIS, on the land of J.O. DAVIS
in Franklin Co. BAILEY requests that the Court orders the Sheriff to be
dispatched to return JIM DAVIS to continue his service. The order was issued the
same date. Executed 23rd Sept 1878 by arresting JAS. DAVIS and delivering him to

Sept. 8, 1884 Franklin County To. W. H. A. HARRIS Clerk of the Superior Court of said County The Petition of PETER GREEN respectfuly showeth that HAYWOOD PERRY & MARGARET

nine years of age and the said MARGARET PERRY is seven years of age, they are
illegitimate children of DIANA PERRY and the petitioner is their natural father.

WHITLEY, JOSEPH HENRY WHITLEY and CELESTIA WHITLEY apprenticed to her To A. W. PEARCE Clerk of the Superior Court of Franklin County The petition of SARAH COOKE respectfully shows to the Court that MIKE WHITLEY
married the petitioners daughter JULIA COOKE, who bore him the following
children, to wit, NELSON WALTER WHITLEY, now ten years old, LUGENIA WHITLEY now
Eight years of age, JOSEPH HENRY WHITLEY now six years of age, and CELESTIA
WHITLEY now three years of age. That the Mother of these children died the 31st
of July 1886, that before the death of the said JULIA, MIKE WHITLEY, to wit, on
Jan. 1, 1886, deserted her and her children and went off to the State of
Georgia, and he has not been to see the children since the death of his wife and
has not contributed anything to their support. The Petitioner has had since the
death of their Mother the sole care and maintenance of these children. She is
their Grandmother and they have no estate at all, and no one to whom they can
look for support and unless the petitioner supports them they will have to go to
the Poor House. Your petitioner therefore asks that the said Children may be

to be bound as apprentices Citation to WINFIELD S. ROE It appearing in the above entitles petition of STELLA PERRY that ELLA PERRY, an
infant without guardian, is in your charge and possession, you are hereby
notified to appear at the Office of the Clerk of the Superior Court on Tuesday
the 22nd day of May, 1888, at 10 a.m., to show cause why the said ELLA PERRY
shall not be bound to the petitioner aforesaid as an apprentice. Given under my

Sept. 1, 1888 SPENCER TERRELL, who was apprenticed to MATTHEW TERRELL on July 2, 1881, filed a
complaint that he was being abused by his master and had been ordered to leave
the premises. MATTHEW is ordered to appear before the WILLIAM J. KING, Clerk of
the Superior Court on Sept. 5, 1888. A citation was served on Sept. 3rd to
MATTHEW TERRELL, and the Indenture was cancelled on Sept. 4, 1888 by the Court.
July 16, 1891 MARY ANN BOBBITT, JOHN EARL, RICHARD JOYNER, W. C. COLLINS and Rev. J. W.
VALENTIN are summoned to appear before the Clerk of Superior Court in Franklin
Court House on July 23, 1891, 11:00 a.m. in an inquiry into the matter of the
apprentice of HULEY CONN to J. J. MURRAY. B.B. MASSENBURG, C.S.C. Order was issued to J. J. MURRAY to appear in the Clerk of Superior Court's
office in Louisburg, on July 23, 1891, to answer complaint by CALVIN CONN about
the ill treatment & ill usage of HULEY CONN.
July 16, 1891 Order of Cancellation of Indenture Complaint filed by CALVIN WALKER CONN about the maltreatment & neglect of ANDREW
CONN, who was apprenticed to J. J. MURRAY on March 15, 1881.The petition stated
that there was proof that ANDREW was ruptured and physically unsound due to the
maltreatment. The Clerk of the Court for Franklin County issued an order to
rescind the Indenture, declared Canceled and void, and that the Apprentice was
at liberty to seek employment elsewhere.
July 16, 1891 Order issued to J. J. MURRAY to appear in the Clerk of Superior Court's office
in Louisburg, on July 23, 1891, to answer complaint by CALVIN CONN about the ill
treatment & ill usage of HULEY CONN.
Oct 10, 1891 WILLIAM HAYWOOD PERRY, complains that JACOB PERRY, whom he was apprenticed to on
March 23, 1891, when he was 12 years old, has violated the conditions of his
apprenticeship by giving him to another master & neglecting to give him any
education.
March 5, 1896 Order issued to ANNA MITCHELL to appear before the Clerk of Superior Court on
Monday, March 9, 1896 at 11:00 a.m. to show cause why the indenture of
apprenticeship between him & ELVIS MANGUM shall not be cancelled. R. R. HARRIS,
Clerk of Superior Court. A subpoena was also issued to R. S. SUIT to appear
before the Clerk in the same matter. The complaint, filed by A. B. COOKE, was
rejected on the fact that there was no sufficient grounds for cancelling the
indenture. The Court did however, modify the Indenture by reducing the term to
seven years, when MANGUM will be 18 years old.
January 15, 1900 SIS DAVIS is ordered to appear in Court on January 18, 1900 and to produce, ROSA
WOOD, an infant in her custody, to show cause why ROSA shouldn't be apprenticed
to FANNIE WOOD.
March 3, 1903 CANDICE & CHARLES BATTLE, requested custody of MARY TOMMIE HOLDEN & LAMMIE LEE
HOLDEN, orphan children of FIDDIE HOLDEN, daughter of CANDICE & CHARLES. They
testified that the father was unknown, and that FIDDIE had asked CANDICE BATTLE
to take care of her children after her death. They ask that MARY TOMMIE HOLDEN
be bound to CANDICE until she was 18 years old and that LAMMIE LEE HOLDEN be
bound to CANDICE until he was 21 years old. CORA CANNADY, charged with detaining
the children without legal guardianship, was ordered to appear in Court. The
request was granted that same date to place the children as apprentices to
CANDICE BATTLE.

I, W.K. DAVIS, Clerk of the Superior Court and Ex officio Judge of Probate for
said County, The petition of JANE WRIGHT, respectfully showeth unto your Honor, that before
the emancipation of slaves your petitioner and GEORGE WRIGHT lived and cohabited
together. That they were near lawfully married, that they continued so to live
together for several years after their Emancipation, without however being
married. That as a result of such cohabitation there were born two children to
wit, JOHN, now aged Eleven years, and OSCAR now aged Eight years. That said
parties do no now live together. That said GEORGE WRIGHT hs the two said boys
with him, and refuses to allow them to remain with their said Mother not
withstanding said boys are anxious & to <torn> that said GEORGE WRIGHT is of
very bad moral character and of very ill temper, He is profane, a gambler and
drunkard and is very unkind and cruel in his treatment of the children. Your
petitioner therefore prays your Honor to apprentice said boys to her all
according to the statute of the State in such case made and provided. and as in
duty bound your petitioner will ever pray &c

DAVID WEBB, once lived with MR. WEBB, was badly treated, not clothed or fed. HENRY live with JACOB LEWIS. Give me Ten dollars and learns me as much as he
can, Gives me 2 suits of clothes a hat, pair shoes and a blanket. Stayed with
Uncle DICKY (?) WEBB my uncle settled for that, don't what he gave your Uncle
HARRY year before last at MR. EDWARD HOUSE, gave me 12 dollars, pair shoes and
hat, and blanket. EDWARD lives with Uncle DOLPH, works with the hoe, give me my victuals, a boy
live at Uncle DENNIS FOSTER's, teaches me sometimes, has learned his A, B, C's,
take lesson every night. DAVID has not been to school any, can read a little, a boy living near Uncle
DOLPHIN learned me to read.
