A brief explanation of serial numers and their meanings
Army serial numbers are issued to all personnel and are assigned accoding to a set of regulations. Consecutive numbers cannot be assigned to twins because confusion could result. Male enlisted personnel are issued simple seven or eight digit numbers, while other personnel are assigned numbers with prefixes. Males who enlisted in the Regular Army prior to Selective Service are assigned numbers of seven or less digits and usually start with a "6" or "7". Men who enlisted in the Army of the United States have eight digit numbers starting with a "1" and with the second digit denoting the Service Command of Origin - for example, a second digit of "4" represents the southeastern U.S.. Males called into federally recognized National Guard service received and eight digit number beginning with a "2" and the third digit represented the Service Command of Origin. Men who were inducted or who enlisted through Selective Service received eight digit numbers beginning with "3" or "4" with the second digit denoting the Service Command of Origin. Prefixes denoted anything other than male enlisted personnel, as the following examples show: |
O = male commissioned officer
W = male Warrant Officer
T = flight officer of the Army Air Forces
L = commissioned officer of the Women's Army Corps (WAC)
V = WAC Warrant Officer
R = Hospital Dietician
M = Physical Therapy Aide
