STEDMAN, James Cooper – (d. 1910)
Fayetteville, NC., November 23 – James Cooper STEDMAN, of this city, passed away at Luke’s Hospital this morning, in the eighty-seventh year of his age, his death coming unexpectedly, though he had for a number of years been an invalid. Mr. STEDMAN was born in Gates county, and lived in Pittsboro until 1853, when he removed to Fayetteville. He was long a prominent merchant and bank officer of this city, though his last years were spent in retirement. He leaves no immediate family, but a number of relatives, among whom are Frank H. Suffolk, Va., March 10 – Hon. H. Clay WILLIAMS died this morning at 7 o’clock in Gates county, N.C., aged 62 years. He lived at Willeyton, twenty-one miles from Suffolk. The funeral will take place at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon from Kittrell’s M.E. Church. The deceased had twice represented his county in the General Assembly of North Carolina, and was formerly State Senator and County Commissioner. He was among the most prominent men in his section. Mrs. I.W. CASTEN, one of the best-known ladies of Gates county, N.C., died last night, aged about 27 years, in Gatesville, the county seat. The funeral was held this afternoon from Kittrell’s M. E. Church, concluding which, the remains were taken to Willeyton for interment. Several friends of the family from Suffolk attended. Deceased was a sister of H.B. CROSS, Esq., Treasurer of Gates county. RIDDICK, L.M. (Mrs.) – (d. 1900)
The remains of Mrs. L.M. RIDDICK, postmistress of Gatesville, N.C., who died of a surgical shock in a Columbus (Ohio) hospital, arrived in Suffolk last night and were today shipped to Gatesville via Gates station for burial. Mrs. RIDDICK had something like a tumor and went to Columbus for attention. The operation killed her. The deceased was the widow of the late Patrick RIDDICK, former sheriff of Gates county, and was a daughter of the late Mills EURE. Patrick Castigan Commits Suicide by Drowning Himself Suffolk, Va., June 29 – Far away from dear ones and made morose and desperate because he couldn’t talk in life, Patrick CASTIGAN, an Irishman, 60 years old, preferred the quiet of death. If he had to keep still he’d rather die. Pat. Yesterday threw himself into the dark waters of Bennett’s Creek, near Gatesville, N.C. Last evening they found his body floating on the creek’s still bosom. He was dead. Pat. CASTIGAN had no blood kin nearer than Ireland so far as is known. Mrs. R.W. GARRIS, 18 years old, died yesterday morning at 7 o’clock at her home 220 Forty-fifth street. The deceased was a native of Gates county, North Carolina, and was married to R.W. TROTMAN, John M. – (d. 1899)
Death of Hon. John M. Trotman Suffolk, Va., March 9 – Hon. John M. TROTMAN, a member of the North Carolina Legislature from Gates county, is dead. The end came last night in Raleigh. The remains passed through Suffolk this afternoon, and were taken to Gates county on a special train over the Suffolk and Carolina. The regular passenger train had gone, and the special was made up to leave at 5:45. The body was accompanied by a single daughter of the deceased, who had gone to Raleigh during her father’s illness, and by Hon. W.D. WELCH, the member from Chowan county. WHEDBEE, Joshua – (d. 1900)
Joshua WHEDBEE, a well-known citizen of Gates County, N.C., died suddenly today in Perquimans county, near the town of Hertford. He was attacked with paralysis or heart trouble and expired suddenly, aged 80 years. Mr. WHEDBEE was visiting the family of his daughter, Mrs. John David PARKER. The burial will take place tomorrow near Gatesville, NC. The deceased leaves two daughters and three sons – Mrs. J.D. PARKER, Perquimans county, N.C.; Mrs. James PARKER, Gates County, N.C.; L.H. and R.H. WHEDBEE, Suffolk; Joshua WHEDBEE, Gates county. He was an uncle of Mrs. Junius T. PARKER andb of Suffolk.
