Porter<\/em><strong><sup><span style=\"color: #ff0000;font-size: x-small\">1<br \/>\n<\/span><\/sup><\/strong>Contributed by Jo Branch<\/p>\n<p>Jesse Porter was born on the 4 of July 1840 in Gates County, North Carolina [see\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ncgenweb.us\/gates\/2012\/05\/13\/porter-john-b-mary-ophelia-family-bible\/\">Porter Bible<\/a>]. Now Jesse Porter had a wife named Margaret Evira Mathias . They had fourteen children.\u00a0 Jesse died in 1909.\u00a0 Their oldest son&#8217;s name was John Benjamin Porter. He was born 28 Feb 1869 in Corapeake, Gates County, NC. John died on 29 Apr 1923 and was buried in Jackson,\u00a0 Clarke County, Alabama. They were my great-grandparents.\u00a0 Jesse&#8217;s parents were James [born ca 1817 &#8211; VA] and Martha Benet Knight Porter. They had 3 sons and 2 daughters.\u00a0 Jesse Porter served with the 33<sup>rd<\/sup>\u00a0North Carolina State Troops Company D (<em>North Carolina Troops 1861-1865: A Roster<\/em>, compiled by Weymouth T. Jordan, Jr.)\u00a0 This company was raised in Gates County and enlisted there in August 1861. It was mustered into state service at Raleigh on December 14, 1861 and was assigned to the 33<sup>rd<\/sup>\u00a0Regiment NC Troops as Company H. When the regiment was transferred to Confederate service on January 9, 1862, the company was designated Company E. The company functioned thereafter as a part of the 33<sup>rd<\/sup>\u00a0Regiment, and its history for the remainder of the war is reported as a part of the regimental history.<\/p>\n<p>A special ceremony was held by the SCV<strong><sup><span style=\"color: #ff0000;font-size: x-small\">2<\/span><\/sup><\/strong>\u00a0near Corapeake, N.C.
