If he had to keep still he\u2019d rather die.\u00a0 Pat. Yesterday threw himself into the dark waters of Bennett\u2019s Creek, near Gatesville, N.C.\u00a0 Last evening they found his body floating on the creek\u2019s still bosom.\u00a0 He was dead. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Pat. CASTIGAN<\/strong> had no blood kin nearer than Ireland so far as is known.\u00a0 He moved to America about twenty years ago, since when he has lived nearly all the time in Gates county.\u00a0 Pat. Was a florist.\u00a0 He eked out a modest living looking after people gardens and telling funny stories.\u00a0 He had traveled in many countries during his younger days and laid by many a quaint selection of humor, interesting anecdote and bit of history.\u00a0 He could tell them well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">For years <strong>Pat. CASTIGAN<\/strong> has been a well-known figure in Gatesville.\u00a0 He was as familiar to court attendants as the Courthouse itself.\u00a0 Nearly everybody knew and liked Pat.\u00a0 He had no enemies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">As long as Pat could get around him a crowd of admirers and make them laugh he was contented.\u00a0 He would likely have lived to a mellow old age but for smallpox and its quarantine regulations.\u00a0 They have some mild cases of smallpox at Gatesville. The premises on which Pat. Lived, and which are owned by <strong>Mr. Joseph A. BROWN<\/strong>, were quarantined.\u00a0 Pat got very angry at having intercourse with his auditors cut off.\u00a0 He rebelled against any such regulations.\u00a0 That was in the first stages of the play that led to tragedy.\u00a0 He had to submit to the authorities.\u00a0 He became docile and listless at enforced quiet.\u00a0 The last stages were pregnant with melancholia. \u00a0Old man <strong>CASTIGAN<\/strong> went temporarily mad and sought refuge in death. He made for the nearest deep water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Dr. George WILLIAMS<\/strong> conducted an inquest over the body.\u00a0 The jury found a verdict of suicide.\u00a0 The deceased left no property, but the good people of Gatesville \u2013 friends of Pat, who had laughed at his wit and his stories \u2013 had no idea of having him fill a pauper\u2019s lot. Today they gave him a respectable burial.
