Also, those doing pre-Civil War research should check deed records, as slaves are reflected in some deeds, in addition to wills and estates.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Slaves Mentioned in Guilford Wills<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>William Adams<\/strong>\u00a0will, written 1834 and probated 1835, mentions negro Manuel and his wife Ruth, and negro girl Grace and her child.<\/p>\n<p><strong>John Burney<\/strong>&#8216;s will, written and probated in 1794, mentions &#8220;negroe Jeffery&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>William Burney<\/strong>&#8216;s will, written 1823 and probated 1824, mentioned the following:<br \/>\nLizzy &#8211; given to his wife and then daughter Rebeccah after wife&#8217;s death<br \/>\nunnamed girl slave in daughter Sally Spence\u2019s possession<br \/>\ngirl slave named Seal given to daughter Peggy Thomas<br \/>\nJim and Garison given to son Josias Burney<\/p>\n<p><strong>James Criswell<\/strong>&#8216;s will, written 1822 and probated 1823, mentions Derry (male slave), to be set free at Criswell\u2019s death<\/p>\n<p><strong>William Criswell<\/strong>&#8216;s will, written in 1816 and probated in 1819, mentioned negroes who were given to brother James and sister Mary Criswell; those negroes were not named.<\/p>\n<p><strong>James Dick<\/strong>&#8216;s will, written 1825 and probated 1826, mentions:<br \/>\nnegro boy Jo, negro girl Eliza, negro woman Hannah &#8211; given to son Hiram Campbell<br \/>\nnegro girl Maria, negro woman Rachel &#8211; given to daughter Jane M. Dick<br \/>\nnegro man Martin &#8211; given to son Reuben [Reuben ended up in Madison County, TN]<br \/>\nnegro boy George &#8211; given to son Thomas<br \/>\nnegro boy Jacob &#8211; given to son John M.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thomas Dick<\/strong>&#8216;s will, written 1820 and probated 1821, mentions:<br \/>\nnegroes Jim, Harry, and wife Jennie &#8211; given to son John W.<br \/>\nnegro girl Looey &#8211; given to daughter Martha W.<br \/>\nnegro Abram, boy Masdey, man Frank &#8211; given to son Thomas J. [who died unmarried a few years later]<br \/>\nnegro boy Manuel &#8211; given to Thomas Lindsay, son of Andrew Lindsay<\/p>\n<p><strong>Robert Lindsay<\/strong>&#8216;s will, written 1818 and probated 1818, mentioned:<br \/>\nnegroes Charles, Mary, Chaney, and Fan &#8211; given to wife Letty<br \/>\nnegro Jake &#8211; given to son A. T.
