Abstracted from Court Records
November Court, 1784. Ordered that ABNER BOOTHE, a base born child begotten on the body of SARAH BOOTHE, be bound to WILLIAM JOHNSTON, learn the art & mistery of planting until arrives at lawful age, he being 13 years old since 14th day of October.
November Court, 1784. BURRELL SMITH surrendered up by his bail for a baseborn child beggotten on the body of BETTY LANDMEN, securitys were ROBERT POWERS JUNR & ____ (blank). Entered themselves his securitys bound in the sum of 20 pounds securitys 10 pounds each, on condition that said BURRILL SMITH keep the child from becoming chargeable to the county.
November Court, 1785. Whereas it appears to this court that ABNER BOOTH, a baseborn child of SARAH BOOTH & now bound apprentice to THOMAS MARSHALL hath been suffered to run at large & hath not been taken proper care of by his master it is therefore ordered that the said THOMAS MARSHALL is a very improper person, to keep the said boy & it is therefore ordered by this Court that the said boy, be taken from the said MARSHALL & bound unto some other more proper person. Same date, ordered that ABNER BOOTH be bound unto WILLIAM JOHNSTON until he arrives at lawful age, learn the art of planting.
May Court, 1786. LEWIS STEVENS, charged with begetting a base born child on the body of SARAH DAMERON, having been bound to appear at this Court to answer the charge and appearing according, ordered that the said STEVENS pay unto SARAH DAMERON the sum of 20 pounds for her lying in expenses and te sum of 7 pounds per year for the first 7 years next ensuing and that he enter into bond of 200 pounds current money to abide by & perform the aforsaid order & that he stand committed until costs are paid.
May Court, 1786. JOHN TAYLOR charged with begetting a baseborn child on the body of MILLIA STAFFORD having been bound to appear at this Court to answer the said charge and appearing accordingly ordered that said JOHN pay unto the said MILLIA the sum of 7 pounds for lying in expenses and also the sum of 7 pounds per year for the first 7 years next ensuing, and that he enter into bond of 200 pounds to abide by and perform such order or decree as the State Court shall think proper to make. Bond Excd.; MARY TAYLOR & REBECCA MORRIS securitys.
August Court, 1786. DAVID HEATHCOCK and JAMES WOOTTEN base born children are bound unto NATHANIEL GLOVER until they arrive at lawful age. Same Court, (as DAVID HATHCOCK), base born child age 9, bound unto AUGUSTINE PARROTT, to learn the art of tayloring.
August Court, 1786. Ordered that baseborn child, NANCY HEATHCOCK. be bound unto JOSEPH WINTER until she arrive at lawful age.
August Court, 1786. Ordered that NATHANIEL GLOVER be cited to appear tomorrow to answer such things as the Court shall then and there consider relative to the apprenticeship of DAVID HALTHORN & JAMES MARTIN, two baseborn children.
November Court, 1786. WORMLY ROSE charged with begetting a baseborn child on the body of FRANCIS TYAR, having been found to appear at Court to answer the charge and appearing accordingly ordered that WORMLY pay to FRANCIS the sum of 7 pounds for the lying in expenses & also the sum of 5 pounds per year for the first 7 years next insuing & that he enter into bond of 200 pounds to abide by & perform such order or decree as the Court may think proper to make. Bond executed; ELISHA ROSE & THOMAS NEAL, securitys.
November Court, 1786. ISAAC RICKS charged with begetting a baseborn child on the body of SARAH BARNES having been bound unto the Court to answer the charge and appearing accordingly ordered that RICKS pay to BARNES the sum of 1 penny for lying in expenses, and also the sum of 5 pounds per year for the first 5 years next succeeding and that he enter into bond of 200 pounds to abide by and perform the aforsd order. Bond entered with BENJ. CROWELL, security.
February Court, 1787. WM. MERRITT, charged for begetting a bastard on the body of LUCY WIGGINS, ordered by the Court that MERRITT enter into bond of 100 pounds to keep the said bastard child so that it does not become a charge to the County. Securitys ABRAM HANKS, JNO. GASKINS.
February Court, 1787. Ordered that ELY WILLIE WOOD a base born child be bound unto JOHN HARGROVE to learn the art of a house joiner and carpenter until be overseer at lawful age, he being now 16 years of age.
May Court, 1787. JOHN SELLARS a base born child is bound unto JOHN GILCHRIST to learn the carpenters trade until he arrives at lawful age, he being now 15 years of age or thereabouts.
May Court, 1787. HENRY TATUM charged with begetting a bastard child on the body of ANN JOLLIEF, having been bound to appear at this Court and appearing accordingly. Ordered that the said HENRY pay to ANN the sum of 5 pounds for the first 5 years next ensuing for the maintaining of the child. Entered into bond of 50 pounds to abide & perform this order. Securitys _____(blank).
May Court, 1787. On the complaint of SARAH DUNCAN setting forth that WILLIAM LOWE was the father of a baseborn child begot of her body and that he had been brought into Court to answer the aforesaid charge appearing &c and left the said Court on paying the fine agreeable to Act of Assembly &c and on his performing a certain agreement by them made, it appearing to the Court that the said WILLIAM LOWE had not performed the aforsd agreement, ordered that the said WILLIAM LOWE pay unto the said SARAH DUNCAN the sum of 10 pounds immediately and the sum of 5 pounds for four years and that a citation issue against the said WM LOWE appear at next Sessions and perform the aforesaid order.
