Subject: Re: [NCHALIFA] Roll Call - MORRIS
Hezekiah (b. abt. 1835, Halifax Co., NC) and Winnifred 'Winnie' (READ/READE) MORRIS had eight children - parents and children were born in Halifax Co., NC.
I know absolutely nothing about Hezekiah or Winnie's families or where they came from.
Hezekiah appears on 1758 militia list, Currituck County, NC, as a resident of Halifax Co., south side of Burnt Creek Swamp (12/31/1776).
Based on his Will, 15 July 1799 - it seems 'my' ancestor was the black sheep of the family, since he didn't receive an inheritance of any kind, as opposed
to his siblings. My ancestor would be the oldest, Adley (James Adley?) MORRIS.
Over time and searching, I have concluded the following birth order - however, records are scarce and this is the best I've found:
1. Adley MORRIS, b. abt. 1755; d. abt. 1811, NC; m. Mary 'Polly' KNIGHT, daughter of Moses KNIGHT (1736-1781) and Charity CARTER (1740-1818).
2. Aquilla MORRIS, b. abt. 1758; d. abt. 1827, Montgomery Co., TN; m. Mary unknown.
3. Holloway MORRIS, Rev. (Baptist), b. abt. 1760; d. 1838 Dickson Co., TN, buried Hurricane Meeting House (cemetary?), Montgomery Co., TN; m. Delilah KNIGHT
(1762-1842).
4. Pricilla MORRIS, b. abt. 1772; d. 1830-1840, Hickman Co., KY; m. Dempsey WHITE (1772-1842).
5. Hezekiah MORRIS, Jr., b. abt. 1774; d. before Feb. 5, 116, Lincoln Co., KY.
6. Rebekah MORRIS, b. abt. 1775; d. before October 1825, Dickson Co., TN; m. David COUNSEL/COUNCIL, b. abt. 1771, NC.
7. Mary MORRIS, b. abt. 1776, d. aftr 1830, poss. in Montgomery Co., TN; m. John EVERETT.
8. Jeremiah MORRIS, b. ??; d. after 1820; m. Elizabeth READ about 1790 in Halifax Co., NC.
I've included all of the children because I've come across several descendants researching Adley's siblings. Unfortunately, I seem to be the only one
looking for info on Adley.

Julia,
Did you mean born abt 1735 rather than 1835? Since he was in a militia list in 1758, I am assuming you meant 1735, at which time Halifax was still a
part of old Edgecombe Precinct. Have you checked with the early Edgecombe and also Bertie Co., NC, records, which is the county that Edgecombe came out
of in 1741? In looking at the old Edgecombe records, I see the name of George, John and Philemon MORRIS. The earliest records of a MORRIS in these
Edgecombe records are as follows:
"Abstracts of Deeds, Edgecombe Pct., Edgecombe Co.,NC, 1732-1758", by Margaret M. Hofmann -
Deed Book 3- Pg. 13
THOMAS GARRILL of Northampton Co. to JAMES WATTS of Northampton Co. 16 Nov. 1745 20 pds VA Money 120 acres on the south side of Roanoke river on the
falls of the sd. river opposite OZEY TAPLEY, joining the river all houses, orchards, gardens, fences etc. Wit: ARTHUR HARRIS, PHILEMON MORRISS Reg. Edge
Co. Nov Ct. 1745 R. Forster, C. Ct.
Deed Book 4- Pg. 38
WILLIAM TERRY of Edge. Co. to JOHN MORRIS (co. not identified) 6 Sept. 1750 20 pds current money of VA. 100 acres on the north side of Tar river,
joining MATHEW RAYFORD, MR. COTTON, Low branch and the Beech swamp all houses, orchards, gardens, fountains, wells, springs etc. as by patent 25 Sept
1711 - Wit: PETER CROCKER, THOMAS HOWELL. Reg. Edge. Co. May Ct 1751 - B. Wynns C. Ct.
Deed Book 5- Pg. 253
JOHN ARNOL of Northampton Co. to JOHN MORRIS of Northampton Co. 29 Mar 1744. 100 pds proclamation money 90 acres Gilliams island in Roanoke river,
joining ARTHUR HARRIS part of a grant to JOHN ARNOL Wit: ROBERT WEATT, JOHN RENWATER.. Reg. Edge. Co. May Ct. 1744 Robert Forster C.
Ct.
As further info, Northampton Co. was formed in 1741 from Bertie at the same time that Edgecombe was formed, so it does seem that you may want to include
those locations in your search.

Harriet ROE, b. abt. 1805, in or near Halifax Co., NC, married Carter MORRIS, son of Adley MORRIS and Polly KNIGHT.
I have been unable to find any kind of information about Harriet, her family, or siblings.
Harriet (ROE) MORRIS died after 1860 census (and before 1870 census) in New Concord, Calloway County, KY, where they owned/leased (?) a tobacco farm.
Carter died about 1884. Any death or burial records were lost in a fire at the Calloway County Courthouse, some time between 1890 - 1900. Carter MORRIS'
year of death is based on memoir by Robert Carter SPEER - memory of the funeral, which he attended at age 13. I have never been able to determine burial

Deloris,
I have been finding and reading your postings for the past hour or so. I, too, am researching families from Halifax County, NC, and the surrounding
counties:
Thrower, Lewis, Pittman, Hull, Sledge, Conner and Hilliard are all on my family tree.
My "brick wall" in this research is the Lewis line. After many trips to Halifax and Raleigh I can not get pass ggg grandmother, Elizabeth Lewis. I have her
will dated Nov. 1864. I can not figure which Lewis man was her husband, nor what was her maiden name.
She lived in Halifax county, around what is today the road leading from Enfield to Ringwood. There are several Lewis Cemeteries in the area, her decendents
are buried there but no Elizabeth have I found.
Her line goes as follows:
Unknown Lewis
+ Elizabeth unknown
John R. Lewis (1820-1877)
+Sarah Butts
John Elby Lewis (1853-1893)
+Elizabeth Magdaline Pittman
Sarah Elizabeth Lewis (1881-1955)
+ Joseph Eldridge Thrower
Marshall Ray Thrower (1908- 1989) my father
+ Edith Nelson Timberlake
Linda Marshall Thrower (me)
+ Dabney B Holt
Dabney B Holt Jr
Steven Marshall Holt
Elizabeth's other children were:
David Lewis
+ Elizabeth Daniel
Elizabeth Lewis
+T M Carlisle
Sallie Lewis
+Matthew Weldon (1st)
+John W Prirchett (2nd)
At first I thought Elizabeth could be Elizabeth King - but I not now.
Now I am wondering if her husband might have been either Lemuel Lewis or Oliver Lewis - two brothers that were convicted of murdering another man in a
drunken fight and were hung - Lemuel - May 7, 1824 and Oliver -June 25, 1825. That is also just a thought, I read in in an abstract of newspaper articles'
however, the gentleman at the State Library could not find it in the paper credited by the book. The timing is right and that's about all. You can see how
hard I'm trying..........
Do you have any suggestions where else I might search ?
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your time,
Linda Holt

century. John sort of disappeared around the time of the Revolution War. Elizabeth (Hall) Thompson died there in 1790's.
By strange coincidence, I actually grew up in Scotland Neck, but this connection I believe goes back to my grandmother's family who settled in (West)
Virginia and Kentucky in the very early 1800's. I am fairly certain that her West Virginia Thompson family is the same one that previously lived in Halifax
County, but I've never found any conclusive proof.

Mary Ann HAMLETT b. Sept. 9, 1833
William Robert HAMLETT b. Dec. 3, 1837
Elizabeth A. HAMLETT b. 1839
Adaline W. HAMLETT b. Dec. 30, 1840
All of these children were born in Halifax Co., NC. According to notes given to the family on the event of the 90th birthday of their oldest child, Mary Ann
HAMLETT Harvey, the family left Halifax Co., NC and arrived in Hickory Valley, Hardeman Co., Tennessee in December of 1842. It is not known if William
HAMLETT/HAMLET made the trip to Tennessee with his wife and children. No record has been found of him in Hardeman Co., TN. Frances W. HERVEY Hamlett married
a second time in Hardeman Co., TN. This marriage was to Joseph J. BOGUS (Boggus, etc.) on September 27, 1845. Therefore, William HAMLETT was dead before
Sept. 1845. Most likely, Frances and her children traveled with family to Tennessee from Halifax Co., NC without William HAMLETT. J. J. Bogus age 35 and
Frances are listed in the 1850 Census of Hardeman Co., TN, along with her children (some of them are named incorrectly in this census). Frances and Joseph
J. Bogus moved to Desha Co., AR where Frances died Nov. 25, 1878. Death date of Joseph J. BOGUS has not been found. Frances and Joseph were living in
Jefferson Township, Desha Co., AR in the 1870 Census. The surname has been misspelled in the census and in the translations.

Subject: Re: [NCHALIFA] Roll Call Harvey and Scotts
I am researching the African American Harvey's and Scott's from Rich Square, Northampton Co., NC. William Henry Harvey came to Rich Square approximately
1884 at the age of 34. He was putting shingles on the house of John Thomas Walden. William married Rebecca Scott the 16 year old cousin of John Thomas
Walden in 1885. No one knows where he came from or of his life prior to 1885 when he came to Rich Square. Family oral history has it that he came from
"over Halifax way". William was on the 1900 census but on the 1910 census it states that Rebecca is a widow. William was listed as living at the time
that his oldest daughter Annie Harvey married James Boyce in January 1908 and his youngest daughter Tempie Harvey was born in 1908. So William probably
died between 1908 and 1910. We cannot find a death record for him or any indication of his previous life so we do not know where to start. Any help or
suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I have been hitting my head against this brick wall for 17 years without any results. Please some of you
experts, what's next? Visit our website at www.harveyreunion.com and look at the
About Us page.
We also have somewhat of the same problem with Rebecca's father Joe Scott. In 1860 at the age of 21 Joe Scott married Easter Walden (daughter of Squire
Walden and Temperance James Walden, (who moved from Halifax to Northampton County)). But I can not find out who his parents are so I can not trace him
any further back because I do not know if I have the right one or not.
Supposedly all of the Scotts, Waldens and Harvey's are from Halifax but we do not know from what family. Neither William Henry Harvey or Joe Scott had
and siblings that the family now know of so It is kind of hard to link them with "anyone". Please any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Florence,
Easter Walden (Rebecca's Mother) married Joseph Scott. Easter's father William Squire Walden's father William Walden was born in Surrey County Virginia. I
have traced the Waldens back to 1637 in Virginia. Some of them migrated to Halifax and Northampton Co., North Carolina in the early 1800's and some of them
went to Indiana and Ohio. Also some of them stayed in Virginia and migrated to northern Virginia near Richmond and Petersburg.
Probably all of these Free Black families migrated in groups from Virginia because where ever you find them you will find the same group of surnames..
Do you have any Waldens in your family? Could you check with Dorothea and see if anyone is tracing her family history and if they had a Joe Scott in their

Subject: Re: [NCHALIFA] Roll Call Harvey and Scotts
Gloria,
I also have SCOTTs & HARVEYs in my tree from Halifax, as well as JAMES. Did you know that in Halifax, the AA HARVEYs who were free started out as
HARWELL? I've found them listed first as HARWELL, then as HARVEL(L) , HARRELL and HARVEY by the late 1800s. There was a William HARVELL/HARVEY, b. 1855
Brinkleyville, Halifax Co., who married Frances LYNCH. b. 1860 (d/o Charles LYNCH & Mary Polly SCOTT) in 1875, but by 1880, he was no where to be found,
while Frances & their 2 children, William & Emanuel, were living
with a family where she was working as a cook, there was no indication as to her marital status, though. I have wondered if her husband had died, or if
he had abandoned them. William was the son of Thomas HARWELL, b. 1800 & Mary SILVER, b. 1827, and again, the family is listed in various records with
all of those spellings of the surname.
Also, you mention that Squire Walden & Temperance James, do you by any chance know who Temperance's parents were? I've suspected that she was the
daughter of Jeremiah & Rebecca James, who lived first in Bertie Co., but later moved to Northampton. Jeremiah died in 1805, but his widow (who later
married Isham SCOTT) received a Revolutionary War Pension for his service when she filed in Tennessee, which gave the names of their children.

Hi,
There were lots of Scots in Halifax, NC. one was a shoemaker and barber there in fact one of his daughters lives here in Buffalo, NY. Not too far from me.
Her name is Dorothea Scott. My gggrandmother was a Malinda Scott,
I know that she lived in "Surrey County Virginia and then later in either Northampton County or Halifax County. She is the mother of my gggrandmother Hester
Ann Briggs Hargrave.

I am researching the Hamill (various spellings over time) and House families in Halifax County. My House ancestor - Henry A. House - came down from
Brunswick County, Virginia in the 1840's and I have most of the Halifax County information on this line. My Hamill line goes back to Adam Hamill who first
appears on the Halifax County tax roles in the 1780's. I am very interested in breaking through this brick wall to determine when Adam Hamill came to
Halifax County and where he came from.Dave HamillFairfax, VA

Subject: Re: [NCHALIFA] Roll Call - HUDSON, BRILEY
I am looking for information on the father of Robert Young Hudson b Sept 1879 in Surry Co NC, spent time at Oxford Orphanage, and settled in Halifax Co
NC. Married Gertrude Briley in Halifax Co. Gertrude was daughter of Wiley Briley and his second wife, Frances Davenport, sister of his first wife, Mary
Ann Davenport, originally from Pitt Co NC and settled in Halifax Co. NC. Robert died Halifax Co in 1932.
Surry Co NC records indicate that Robert's mother was Lucy Ann Hudson, daughter of Young Hudson and Dicy Whitaker. Lucy was a widow for over 18 years
when Robert was born. The 1800 census records his name as Samuel.
Another Halifax Co NC records his father's name as Samuel Hudson. This Samuel is the one I seek and any information on him.
Many thanks

Jeremiah James (1762 - 1805) may have spent some time in Halifax although he died in Northampton. He also married there in 1790 to Rebecca [?]. After his
death Rebecca married an Isham Scott. They may have lived in Halifax for a time before his death at which time she and some of her children went to
Tennessee. Jeremiah and Rebecca's son Asa James (1806 Warren or Halifax-1864) married Elizabeth Richardson, daughter of Hardy Richardson, in Halifax in
1826. Asa James known to have lived in Halifax, Warren and Nash Counties before migrating about 1847 to Cherokee County.

Mary Council (daughter of Hardy Council and Susannah Fulgham) married first (date unknown) to Henry Applewhite in Isle of Wight, Virginia.
After his death about 1739 she married Phillip Brantley and they moved to Halifax County, North Carolina. Mary had four children with Henry. They may
have been Amy, Henry, Priscilla and John. It is likely they all went to Halifax with their mother. Amy probably married Thomas Richardson about 1752,
perhaps in Halifax.

Horton married James Whitis Bulloch. They
eventually ended up in San Augustine Co. Texas. James Whitis Bulloch's parents are unknown. There may be a Whitis connection?

Hi Deloris,
I posted this yesterday and don't know if you have had a chance to add it to the website yet or not, but just in case you can still do that, my posting is
repeated below.
Thanks so much,
Susi Godfrey
John Earwood stated on his rev. War Pension Application that he was born in Halifax Co., NC in 1762. I have found 2 documents signed by a John Earwood, both
in 1763 in Halifax Co. records. Both times, he signed, or rather put his "X", as a witness. Once for Green Emry and once for Abraham Johnston. The man who
signed those documents is presumably the father of the man who was born in 1762.
I can find nothing else about this family in that time period.
