(Daniel Coleman was born abt 1752 probably in Dinwiddie Co., VA; he purchased 150 acres from Zachariah Sullivant in Halifax Co., near the mouth of Great Branch in 1818, and was listed as Free Person of Color in Halifax Co. in 1820 & 1840. His wife is currently unknown to me.)
 

I, DANIEL COLEMAN, of Halifax County and State of North Carolina being low in health but of dispersing mind do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following - (to wit)
1st I wish all my debts to be paid. 2nd I wish the children of my daughter ELIZABETH WILLIAMS jointly to draw one 13th part of my Estate. Also I wish the children of my Son HENRY COLEMAN to draw jointly one 13th part of my estate. The rest of my property to be equally divided among all my children except my daughter ELIZABETH and my son HENRY, to each of which I give one Shilling the portion of property going to my Six youngest children (to wit) IRVIN, ANN, NANCY, SAVANAH, DANIEL, & ROSANAH. I leave in the hand of my son WYATT COLEMAN for their support each one to take their part as they arrive at the age of twenty one years. I also appoint my son WYATT COLEMAN Executor to this my last will and testament. As witness I have hereunto set my hand and seal the 25 day of September AD 1848

Then the foregoing paper writing purporting to be the last will and testament of DANIEL COLEMAN was offered for probate and the same being duly proven by the oath of GIDEON P. HERVEY and LEMUEL B. BENNETT two of the subscribing witnesses thereto is ordered to be recorded whereupon WYATT COLEMAN the Executor named therein is duly qualified.

Notice:
The subscribed, having at the last Feb. Session of the County Court of Halifax County qualified as Executor to the last will of DANIEL COLEMAN dec'd hereby notifies all persons having any claims, or demands against the Estate of said deceased to bring the same forward for payment within the time prescribed by law or this notice will be pleaded in bar of their recovery. March 8th 1849.

W. BATCHELOR's storehouse, & at JAMES H. PARKER's house. Given under my hand this 24th day of May 1849.

Inventory of the personal property of DANIEL COLEMAN, dec'd which came into the hands of WILLIAM H. LYNCH, his admr. D.B.N. on the 27th of October A.D. 1854

The Administrator begs leave to report to the Probate Court of Halifax County that there is no personal property belonging to the Estate of his Intestate and that no personal Estate ever came into his hands as such administrator nor in the hands of any other person for him. That there is a tract of land belonging to the Estate of his intestate containing one hundred & fifty acres more or less.
That he rented out the said for the year 1868 for the sum of one hundred & fifty dollars, to BRYANT RUDD but collected no money and is advised that he has no control of the real estate. He hold the bond of the said BRYANT RUDD with security, but having no control over the funds, if collected, he returns the note although doubtful as real Estate.
The said real Estate descends to JUNIUS LYNCH & JOYNER LYNCH children of WILLIAM H. LYNCH and HAVANA LYNCH [sic] formerly HAVANA COLEMAN [sic], ANNA RUDD wife of BRYANT RUDD, HENRY COLEMAN, LUCY ANN child of BETSY formerly BETSY COLEMAN, and JNO N. child of JANE NORWOOD formerly JANE WILLIAMS, DORA, MARY & THOMAS - children of NANCY COLEMAN, MARCHIANDER, child of JAMES COLEMAN- and ROSANNA COLEMAN daughter of the said DANIEL COLEMAN.

Personally came HENRY COLEMAN before me the Probate Judge for the County aforesaid & make oath that JAMES COLEMAN dec'd the inventory of whose estate is herewith annexed was his own brother that he is the nearest of kin of the deceased except his daughter a minor named MARTHA ANN* living in this county that he is the person entitled by law to administration on his estate that the above is a true inventory of the estate & the value thereof is Three hundred dollars. There is no Guardian appointed for the daughter aforesaid & that the said JAMES COLEMAN dec'd died intestate and that he the said HENRY COLEMAN applies for letters of administration to be granted to him on the estate of the said JAMES COLEMAN, and is ready to give good Security on his bon as the law prescribes.

4th Oct 1868

And then upon the said HENRY COLEMAN's appointed administrator of the said JAMES COLEMAN deceased and executes his official Bond in the sum of $600 which is accepted by the Court and is filed of word and the securities to said Bond THOMAS G. MOORE, S. A. HERVEY and the said HENRY COLEMAN Administrator as aforesaid is qualified as such of taking and subscribing the oath prescribed by law which is filed. Whereupon Letters of Administration issued to him accordingly.
