(From Laurinburg Exchange) Elisha Morris, aged 78 and one of Scotland county's outstanding farmers and citizens, passed away
at his home on the Maxton-Johns road in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Mr. Morris had been in declining health for two
years or longer, following a stroke of paralysis. His physical strength continued to wane but he kept up an active interest
in his work and in life and events of his time.
Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock, followed by interment at Stewartsville cemetery.
Mr. Morris was a pioneer in diversified farming and his work as plant breeder and farmer had attracted wide attention
in this and other states. For a number of years the work on the Morris farm had been carried on E. Morris & Son, his son, Mr.
Fairley Morris, being associated with him in this business. He was not only a successful and practical farmer, who made the
dirt yield its increase and bring a fair return for labor and toil in normal years, but he was a substantial and upstanding
citizen, contributing to the community life and was actively interested in the work of schools and churches and in sympathy
with all forward-looking movements.
He was brought up in the strict school of scrupulous conduct and high-minded purpose, and was un-yielding in his
convictions wherever and whenever principle was at stake.
The following paragraphs are from this week's issue of the Maxton Scottish Chief:
Mr. Morris was the son of Daniel and Mary Bridges Morris. He was born in Harnett county, November 9, 1854, and was
only a child when his father lost his life serving with the Confederate army. He and his widowed mother were left alone
to face the hardships following the War Between the States.
On December 9, 1879, Elisha Morris married Miss Mary Stewart of Jackson Springs,[Moore County], who survives him. Of the 7 children
born to this marriage, the following five survive: J.C. Morris of Richmond, VA, D.B. Morris, Fayetteville, NC; Mrs. E.G.
McCallum, Candor, NC; Mrs. Clyde Jernigan, Richmond, VA; and R.F. Morris of Maxton, NC. The latter son was associated with
his father in the seed-plant business.
Coming to this vicinity some thirty years ago and purchasing his plantation in Scotland county, Mr. Morris and his family
became members of the Maxton Presbyterian church and have been loyal and faithful members.
