(1839 – THIS IS A LIST OF SCHOOL DISTRICTS AND COMMITTEE MEN There were 31 school districts created and between three and four School Committeemen appointed for each district.)
State of North Carolina, Henderson County. The bond of the superintendent of common school for the county aforesaid in compliance with the fourth section of an act of the General Assembly, passed on the eighth day of January, 1839, entitled an act to divide the county into school districts and for other purposes do hereby submit to the instances of the county court of the county aforesaid the following report. Description of the school district as laid out by the Board of Superintendents under the provision of the above recorded act.
DISTRICT 1: Beginning at the mouth of Cane Creek and runs up the meanders of the French Broad River to Kings and Millers Bridge. Thence, with the Haywood Road to the old Saluda Road. Thence on easterly direction to the summit of the Stoney Mountain. Thence a direct line to the mouth of Clear Creek. Thence up the meanders of the same to the mouth of Cherryfield Branch. Thence in a northerly direction so as to include James McMinns and Elisha Kings. Thence to Merrimon Fletchers. Thence a northerly direction so as to include William Lanning to the west of Cagle Mountain. Thence with the county line to the beginning. The following named men are nominated and appointed as School Committeemen in and for the above District: James Spann, Francis Byers and Elisha King.
DISTRICT 2: Beginning on number 1 where it crosses the old Saluda Road west of Stoney Mountain and runs in a southwardly direction so as to include Jonathan King on Shaws Creek. Thence on the same course so as to include Robert Coward and John Shipman. Thence on easterly direction so as to include William Fowler, David Reese, James Beck and William Steedman to the main road at the little Mud Creek. Thence the same course to the mouth of Bats Fork. Thence a northerly direction so as to include John P. Corn to the head of Cherryfield Branch, then down the same to its junction with Clear Creek the line of number 1. Thence with the same to beginning. The following gentlemen are appointed School Committeemen for the first above District number 2, namely: Phillip Brittain, Samuel McCarson, David Reese, and Jonathan King.
DISTRICT 3: Begins at the mouth of Ballards Branch and runs a west course with the county line to the top of the Yellow Ridge. Thence a southwardly direction to the top of the mountain opposite the forks of the Mills River. Thence a direct line to the fork of said Mills River. Thence with the meanders of the same to the beginning. The following gentlemen are appointed School Committeemen for the School District Number 3: William Bryson, James N. Jones and Reuben H. Ballard.
DISTRICT 4: Begins on number 3 at the mouth of Mills River and runs up the meanders of the same to the end of the Iron Works Mountain above Davis Murrays. Thence a southwesterly direction with the top of said mountain until it comes opposite the head of Bitsey Branch. Thence down the meanders thereof to its junction with Brittains Creek. Thence a direct line to the head of Bridge Creek. Thence with Frazier Creek to French Broad River. Thence down the same to the beginning. The following gentlemen are appointed as School Committeemen of School District number 4. Col. Moses Smith, Col. John Clayton, Captain Davis Murray.
DISTRICT 5: Begins at the end of Iron Works Mountain on the line of Number 4 and runs with the line of the same until it comes opposite and head of Bitsey Branch, thence a direct course to the Bradley Fork tract of land on the Bradley Fork of Mills River. Thence on a direct line to the top of the mountain thence in a direct line to the gap between the heads of the creeks to the line of Number 3 thence with the line of the same to the beginning. The following gentlemen are appointed as School Committeemen: Matthew Galaspy, Lawrence Sitton, and Merit Rickman.
DISTRICT 6: Begins at Kings and Miller’s Bridge on French Broad River at the corner of Number 1. Thence on a southwardly direction to John Shipmans thence along the dividing ridge between the waters of Willow and Shaws Creek so as to include Andrew Wilson and William Murray to French Broad River below Jermiah Osborn’s thence down the meanders of the same to the beginning. The following gentlemen are appointed Committeemen of the Sixth District: Noble Johnson, Andrew Wilson and Hugh Johnson.
DISTRICT 7: Begins on the Buncombe line on the west side of Cagle mountain and runs with the head of the same to Creek a little east of Gerry’s Gap then with the leading ridge a southwardly direction to the extremity of the Green Mountain then with a leading ridge of said mountain to Clear Creek and crossing the same so as to include Susan Kelsey thence a westerly direction to a point of Hiram King’s mountain then with the same so as to include P. Gilreath to Clear Creek Meeting House then on in the same direction to Cherry Branch then with the meanders of the same to Clear Creek thence with the line of Number one to the beginning. DISTRICT 8: Begins at the Cherryfield Branch in the line of Number 1 and runs with the line of the same to the mouth of Bat’s Fork thence up same to the mouth of Craw Creek thence up said creek with the line of the ridge district to the top of the Blue Ridge thence in a southeasterly direction so as to include Ed Shipman, Sr., and John Blackwell to the mouth of Tumble Bug Creek thence up the meanders of the same to its head thence a southwardly direction with the leading ridge between little Clear Creek and Henderson’s Creek to the corner of Number 1, thence with the line of the same to the beginning. DISTRICT 9: Begins at the corner of number 7 and runs with Buncombe line to the extreme heights of Bear Wallow Mountain thence with same to the Rutherford line thence with same so far as to include James Stepp, Sr., thence up the east fork of Reedy Patch Creek to the summit of Point Lookout Mounting at the foot of aid mountain thence a westwardly direction so as Pool Tavern, Samuel Edney, Sr., R. DISTRICT 10: Begins at the corner of Number 9 and runs with the line of Number 8 to the mouth of Tumble Bug Creek then on eastwardly direction to the Rutherford line thence with the same to the head of Gun Britches Creek to include the place where Thomas E. Justice now lives thence with the meanders of said creek to the line of Number 9 thence with the same to the beginning. School Committeemen: John Case, W. K. Ledbetter, Walter Williams
DISTRICT 11: Begins on top of the Blue Ridge at the head of Craw Creek and runs with aid creek in a southwesterly direction to its junction with Butt Mountain thence south to the summit of said mounting thence southeasterly direction so as to include Matthew Capps, William Capps and James Henderson to Green River thence down the meanders of the same to the north of Hungry, then up the meanders of the same to the mouth of Center Branch, then up same branch including James Stepp, Sr. to the beginning. The following gentlemen are appointed School Committeemen for the first above District 11, namely: Robert Jones, John Justus, Sr., Esquire, Green Taylor.
DISTRICT 12: Begins at Howard Gap Turnpike road running with the county line northwardly to Green River thence with said River with the meanders of the river to the Remis Ford thence in a southwardly direction to James Thompson’s place thence to the South Carolina line near Squire Morgan’s with the Saluda Mountain thence in an easterly direction to the Rutherford line thence northwardly with said line to the beginning. The following gentlemen are appointed School Committeemen for number 12, namely: Richard Allen, John Pace and Jonathan Pace.
DISTRICT 13: Beginning at Revis’ Ford on Green River on the line of number 11 and runs with the same on an eastwardly direction to the summit of the Butt Mountain thence with the same direction with the Blue Ridge to Joseph H. Kuykendall thence southwardly to Green River Meeting House so as to include Ephraim Harts thence southwardly to the head of Gap Creek to the South Carolina line thence eastwardly with said line to Squire Morgans on the Saluda Mountain thence northwardly to the beginning. The following gentlemen are appointed School Committeemen for District number 13, namely: John Davis, Merideth Freeman, Joseph B. Thomas.
DISTRICT 14: Beginning on the Blue Ridge at Joseph H. Kuykendall and runs westwardly with the ridge to the gap near Joseph Shadocks old place thence northwesterly with the line of the Green River District to the beginning. The following gentlemen are appointed School Committeemen for number 14, namely: John McMinn, Ransom Thompson and Moses Heatherly.
DISTRICT 15: Beginning at the mouth of Bats Fork of Mud Creek and runs with the meanders of the same until it strikes a south direction with Butt Mountain thence southwesterly direction with the summit of the Blue Ridge until it comes opposite to or within a north and south direction with the bridge across Mud Creek at Capps old place thence to said ridge thence with the meanders of said Mud Creek to the main Saluda Road thence on eastwardly direction to the beginning. The following gentlemen are appointed School Committeemen for the 15th district: William Bryson, John M. Kimzey and Charles Barnett.
DISTRICT 16: Beginning at the main road where it crosses Mud Creek on the line of number 2 and runs in a westerly direction with the line of the same to John Shipman’s thence in a southwardly direction with the dividing ridge between the waters of Mud Creek and Willow to the top of the Willow Mountain at the same point between Samuel Cantrell and Robert McMinns. The following gentlemen are appointed School Committeemen for district 16: Charles Greer, Leonard Cagle, Jacob Shipman.
DISTRICT 17: Begins at the mouth of Shaws Creek and runs up said Creek to its head thence along the tops of its ridges to Blue Ridge thence along the same to Rocky Mountain below Jeremy King’s thence a straight line to the Gap of Winton below Samuel Cantrell and Robert McMinns at the same point near the Wolf Mountain thence along the dividing ridge between Willow Creek and Mud Creek so as to include Samuel Evans thence along the dividing ridge between the water of Crab Creek and Willow to the corner of number 19 near the Widow Sentell’s Thence with the line of the same to the beginning. The following gentlemen are appointed School Committeemen for the district 7, namely: Solomon Jones, Robert McMinn and Boyd McCrery, Esquire.
DISTRICT 18: Begins at the French Broad River below David Haddon’s thence along the dividing ridge between the waters of Crab Creek and Willow Creek to the head of Mud Creek thence with the dividing ridge between Willow Creek and Mud Creek to the head of Shaws Creek leaving Samuel Evans in 17 district thence along the dividing ridge between Willow Creek and Shaws Creek west of the French Broad River below Jeremy Osborne thence up the same to the beginning. The following gentlemen are appointed School Committeemen for number 18, namely: James Blythe, Richard Sentell and John Davis Jr.
DISTRICT 19: Begins at Pattons Ford on French Broad River and runs with the line of the following district number 20 to the top of Black Knob thence with the dividing ridge to the shoals of Little River above E. Hightowers thence with the dividing ridge to Shaws Creek and down same to Crab Creek. Thence a straight line by Widow Sentells to the top of Willow Mountain. Thence along the dividing ridge to the French Broad River below David Haddon. Thence up the same to the beginning. The following gentlemen are appointed School Committeemen for number 19, namely: Benjamin King, Jr., Charles Slagle and Joseph Hamilton.
DISTRICT 20: Begins at French Broad River at the mouth of Hog Head and runs up said creek to the Fork. Thence to the top of Rich Mountain thence along the top of the dividing ridge to Patton Ford on French Broad thence up the meanders of the river to the beginning. The following gentlemen are appointed School Committeemen for number 20, namely: John Evans, William Wilson and John Allison.
DISTRICT 21: Begins on French Broad River at the mouth of Willis Still House Branch thence up said branch to the foot of Fodder Stack Mountain. Thence with top of said mountain to the corner of the following District number 22 thence with the line of the same to Mills River. Thence down said river including Leonard Swanigain. Thence to the head of Bridge Creek thence with the meanders of Frazier creek to French Broad River thence up with the same to the beginning. The following gentlemen are appointed School Committeemen for number 22, namely Gordon Anderson, James h. Hood and Alfred Gash.
DISTRICT 22: Begins at the ford on Davidson River at the Laurel Bluff and runs with the following district number 23 to the Bow Gap at the mouth of Lyday Creek. Thence on the dividing ridge between Lydays Creek, Taylors Creek to the top of the ridge. Thence crossing Balston Creek below James Simpson to Mills River including Thomas Simpson and John Summey. Thence up Mills River to Bow Gap to the head of Turkey Creek. Thence along the dividing ridge between Turkey Creek and Averys Creek to Davidson River then around the mountain including Joel McRany to said river. Thence down said river to the beginning. The following gentlemen are appointed School Committeemen for district 22: Moss Manly, D. B. Miller, William Davidson and George Clayton.
DISTRICT 23: Begins at the mouth of Davidson River and runs up said river to the ford at Laurel Bluff thence along the dividing lines between Gleeds Creek and Turkey Creek to Blow Gap at the mouth of Lydays Creek thence a straight direction to the end of Fodder Stack around the foot of said mountain to the head of Stall House Branch thence with the meanders of said branch to the river thence up the river to the beginning. The following gentlemen are appointed School Committeemen for number 23, namely: Morton A. Gash, George Weise, and John C. Gullick.
DISTRICT 24: Begins at Davidson River at its junction of Avery Creek thence to the top of the ridge between Avery Creek and Turkey Creek. Thence along the said ridge to the dividing ridge between Davidson River and Mills River including Pink Bed Settlement around the head of Davidson River to the Cedar Rock. Thence straight line to Davidson River below James C. Cooper thence up said river to the beginning. The following gentlemen are appointed School Committeemen for number 24, namely: William Bridges, John Hawkins and James Young.
DISTRICT 25: Begins at the mouth of King’s Creek and runs up said creek to the head thence passing the head of Lamb’s Creek along a dividing ridge below Lamb’s Creek and Davidson River to Miller’s Mill thence down said river to its mouth. Thence up French Broad River to the beginning. The following gentlemen are appointed School Committeemen for number 25, namely: Govan Trammell, Alex England and Samuel Ervin.
DISTRICT 26: Begins on the south side of French Broad River at the mouth of Hogshead Creek and running up said river to the Hungry Mountain including all the inhabitants on the south side of the same, with Robert Jordon, Archibald Jordon, William Hadden and William Baxter Laying on the north side of the river. The following gentlemen are appointed School Committeemen for number 26, namely: Nathan Davis, Robert Jordon and Helam Loftis
DISTRICT 27: Begins at Graham’s Creek on the south side of French Broad River and runs to Cherryfield Creek, including all the inhabitants on the north side of said river between said creeks, except R. Jordon and Baxter, the following gentlemen are appointed School Committeemen for number 27, namely: Benjamin Wilson, Samuel King and John M. Duckworth.
DISTRICT 28: Begins at Cherryfield Creek running upon both sides of French Broad River to include all the settlement up the said river on both sides north of a line running from Johnson Mountain straight by William Gallaway, Sr., the following gentlemen are appointed School Committeemen for number 28, namely: Henry Lyon, Isaac Glazener, William Patton
DISTRICT 29: Begins at a line running straight from Johnson’s Mountain to William Gallaways, including all the inhabitants on the east waters of the French Broad River. The following gentlemen are appointed School Committeemen for 29, namely: Hugh Johnson, Robert H. Gillispe, Joseph Glazner
DISTRICT 30: Includes all the inhabitants of Glosster, except Robert McCall. The following gentlemen are appointed School Committeemen for Number 30, namely: Ephrean Kitchens, James Galloway and John McCall.
DISTRICT 31: Begins at the road on Shaws Creek thence with the line of the 19th district to the top of Black Knob thence along the dividing ridge to the top of Rich Mountain. Thence down Cowan’s Creek to the Little River thence down said river to the Duncan’s Creek thence up the same to the head of Low Gap. Thence a direct line to the head of Shoals Creek thence down the same to the beginning.
