COUNTY OF HENDERSON

On this 9th day of May, A.D. 1885, personally appeared before me, C. M. Pace, \C.S.C. in and for the State and County aforesaid, Jacob Kuykendall, age 54 years, and a resident at Flat Rock post office in said County and State, and who being duly sworn makes the following declaration in order to obtain the pension under the provision of an act entitled “An Act for the relief of certain soldiers in the late war between the States”, ratified March 11th 1885, that he is the identical Jacob Kuykendall who enlisted in Co. G, 35th Reg. N.C. State Troops, on or about the 1st day of October 1861, to serve in the armies of the late Confederate States, and that while in said service at Plymouth in the State of No. Ca. On or about the 24th day of March 1864, he received a wound or wounds, &c, &c,

(Here state nature of wounds, whether or not a leg, an eye, or an arm was lost, or is the applicant now incapacitated for manual labor by reason of wounds received while in the dischargef his duty as a soldier):         While engaged in said services, he was wounded in the left arm and hand and lost one finger, and has a piece of a shell in his arm, in consequence of which he is unable to do manual labor, said wounds were received while in the discharge of his duty as a soldier.

He further states that he holds no office in the United States, State or County, from which he is receiving the sum of three hundred dollars in fees or as a  salary, that he is not worth in his own right or the right of his wife, property at its assessed value for taxation to the amount of five hundred dollars ($500), and that he is not receiving any aid from the State of North Carolina, under any other statue providing for the relief of the maimed and blind soldiers of the State.

Also personally appearing before me, A. H. Tabor, who resides at Flat Rock post office, in said County and State, a person whom I know to be respectable and entitled to credit, and being by me duly sworn, says he is acquainted with Jacob Kuykendall, the applicant for pension, and has every reason to believe that he is the identical person he represents himself to be, and that the facts set forth in this affidavit are correct to the best of his knowledge and belief and that he has no interest in this claim.  Sworn and subscribed to before me, this 8th day of May 1885.

Declaration of Soldier for pension by Jacob Kuykendall.

Also personally appeared before me Dr. T. A. Allen, a physician in good standing in said County and State, and being sworn, says that he has carefully and thoroughly examined Jacob Kuykendall, the applicant for pension, and finds him incapacitated for manual labor by reason of wounds received while in the discharge of his duty as a soldier or sailor of North Carolina, in the service of the late Confederate States.    (Give nature of wounds.)

Statement by physician:    I have examined the above applicant and find his left arm has been wounded and so injured and heal, is has in a measure swunk away and he is unable to do labor and has lost one finger on his left hand.

The above claim was approved and filed by the Board of Inquiry fo Henderson Co. NC  17th Day of July 1885.

SOLDIER’S APPLICATION FOR PENSION

STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA

COUNTY OF HENDERSON

On the 24th day of May A. D. 1902, personally appeared before me, John B. Finley, Justice of the Peace, in and for the State and County aforesaid, Jacob Kuykendall, age 70 years, and a resident at Grange post office in said County and State, who, being duly sworn, makes the following declaration in order to obtain the pension under the provision of an act entitled “An Act to amend Chapter 198 of the laws of 1889, for the relief of certain Confederate Soldiers, and widows, “ratified March 2, 1901””  That he is the identical Jacob Kuykendall, who enlisted in Co. G, 35th Reg. N. C. State Troops, on or about the 5th day of October 1861, to serve in the armies of the late Confederate States, and that while in said service at Plymouth and Petersburg, in the State of Virginia, on or about the 17th day of June 1864, he received wound/wounds, etc.  (Applicant will here state the nature and extent of his wounds and disabilities, so that a proper classification can be made under the new Pension Law passed by the General Assembly of 1901.  Read said section of said Law carefully, and to accomplish the classification therein called for, let statement here as to nature and extent of wounds, disability, etc., be very full and explicit.)       That the said soldier was first wounded in the left arm at Plymouth, North Carolina and then the second time he was wounded at Petersburg, Virginia in the same left (crossed out arm) Hand and further swears that he never deserted the late Confederate

Army and  further states that he was on the list of Pensioners and was drawing Pension under Chapter 198 of Laws of 1889 before the Act to amend ratified March 2nd 1901.

He further states that he is, and has been for twelve months immediately preceding this Application for Pension, a bona fide resident of North Carolina; (and etc.)

Appearing as a witness to the above was B. F. Hood who resided in Hendersonville and sworn to the statement 24 May 1902 before John H. Finley, J. P.

The Physician’ statement for the above was made by T. A. Allen;

I certify that I have carefully examined the above soldier and find that he has lost the ring finger on left hand by gunshot and has a piece of shell in left arm by the elbow which has been there since the war.  Had the bone of right (thigh crossed out) leg has been broke and left foot mashed by a log rol (l) ing on the foot..   He is ¾  disabled or almost totally disabled from manual labor.  He is 73 years old.   Sworn and subscribed 19th day of June 1902 before John H. This pension was approved and filed as 4th Class.

The above Jacob Kuykendall, (also known as Jacob Rollo Kuykendall) was born 2 Oct 1831 in Spartanburg, SC, son of Rev. Joseph and Ruth (Guice) Kuykendall of Henderson Co. NC.  He died 2 July 1906 in Henderson Co. NC.   He was married 28 Nov 1852 in Henderson Co. NC by his father Rev. Joseph Kuykendall, to Henrietta P. Thompson born 2 Jan 1835 in Buncombe (now Henderson) Co. NC.  Daughter of Robert and Jane (Redd) Thompson of Henderson Co. NC.  She died 31 Mar 1907.  Both are buried in the Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in East Flat Rock.  Written on both tombstones are the words “Gone On Before”.
