{"id":471,"date":"2009-07-20T12:55:04","date_gmt":"2009-07-20T18:55:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ncgenweb.us\/henderson\/?page_id=4"},"modified":"2024-12-12T00:50:29","modified_gmt":"2024-12-12T00:50:29","slug":"home","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ncgenweb.us\/henderson\/","title":{"rendered":"Welcome"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong> Welcome to Henderson County NCGenWeb<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Henderson County is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of southwestern North Carolina and was formed from a part of Buncombe County&nbsp;in 1838. &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hendersonvillenc.gov\/\">Hendersonville<\/a>, the largest community was incorporated in 1847. The county gets its name from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ncpedia.org\/biography\/henderson-leonard\">Leonard Henderson<\/a>, who was chief justice of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ncpedia.org\/supreme-court-north-carolina\">North Carolina Supreme Court<\/a>&nbsp;from 1829 to 1833. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ncgenweb.us\/henderson\/wp-content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/hendersoncountylogo.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"158\" height=\"59\" src=\"https:\/\/ncgenweb.us\/henderson\/wp-content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/hendersoncountylogo.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1145\" style=\"width:206px;height:auto\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Early on, eight townships provided leadership within Henderson County.&nbsp;&nbsp;The county\u2019s townships were Hendersonville, Blue Ridge, Green River, Edneyville, Mills River, Hoopers Creek, Crab Creek and Clear Creek.&nbsp;&nbsp; These townships were active and became the foundation for the county. &nbsp;Today some of Henderson County\u2019s popular municipalities besides the above-mentioned townships include Flet<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fletchernc.org\/\">cher<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.laurelpark.org\/\">Laurel Park<\/a>, Mills River, and the Village of Flat Rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Cherokee Indians were the first inhabitants of this county. &nbsp;Hendersonville was part of the early land grants west of the Blue Ridge Mountains and has a very rich heritage. In 1787, Revolutionary War soldier William Mills, settled on his property located here in Henderson County. Mills is credited with establishing the foundations for the county and its principal city. Mills planted hundreds of fruit trees in the area, along with typical crops.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/carl\/learn\/news\/tour-changes.htm\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"579\" src=\"https:\/\/ncgenweb.us\/henderson\/wp-content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1131\" style=\"width:567px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ncgenweb.us\/henderson\/wp-content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/image.png 960w, https:\/\/ncgenweb.us\/henderson\/wp-content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/image-300x181.png 300w, https:\/\/ncgenweb.us\/henderson\/wp-content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/image-768x463.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/carl\/learn\/news\/tour-changes.htm\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/carl\/learn\/news\/tour-changes.htm\">Carl Sandburg<\/a>, a Literary giant spent the last two decades of his life in Flat Rock on his homestead called&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ncpedia.org\/connemara\">Connemara<\/a>. Today, his home and farm are preserved as historic sites. The &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flatrockplayhouse.org\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.flatrockplayhouse.org\/\">Flatrock Playhouse <\/a>which was established in the early 1940s, is still the official North Carolina State Theater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Today Henderson County leads the state in apple production. The county&#8217;s economy also depends on its tourism and retirement facilities.
