A church Record belonging to All Saints church
Parish Fairfield
& Swan Quarter, Hyde County North Carolina
|
Services were commenced at the academy at
Fairfield on the 3rd Sunday in February 1876. The
congregations were large and attentive, and kept increasing until the end
of the year. During the year of 1877 two Sundays in each month were
given and the improvement of the congregation in music and in a reverent &
devout rendering of the services of the church has been marked. In
the latter part of this year, however, there was a slight interruption in
the services caused by the doors of the academy being closed against us.
The confusion caused by this petty bit of prejudice, however, was of short
duration. Another room was secured in which to worship & services
were continued regularly as before. In 1879, having established
Monthly services at Swan Quarter on the 1st Sunday in each
Month, this necessitated the withdrawal of one Sunday from Fairfield.
A monthly service was then held there on the 3rd Sunday morning
& night until the 3rd Sunday in Sept. 1880. Soon after
this date the seats, lectern & organ were taken out, the worship of the
???? God was excluded, and *Mammon took & has since held possession.
Sic regat gloria Mundi [Latin phrase meaning "Thus passes the glory of
the world."* Wikipedia: Mammon
in the New Testament of the Bible is commonly thought to mean money,
material wealth, or any entity that promises wealth, and is associated
with the greedy pursuit of gain.

The Rev. L.N. Jackson as Missionary to Fairfield by the Bishop's
appointment visited Fairfield and held Services Friday night Aug. 12th
1881, Sunday A.M. and P.M. Aug. 14th. Baptized one child.
Congregations good, but there is little hope of permanency or growth until
a comfortable Church building is erected, and more frequent services can
be given than monthly appointments, There |
Part I are five communicants connected with the Mission,
one gentleman and four ladies. We may soon have to vacate the only
place eligible for our services. The present Missionary, therefore,
is not very sanguine of success. /s/ Lewis H. JacksonOct. 7th 1885 a lot was purchased at Fairfield
of Mrs. L.E. Blackwell for the sum of $100.00; the cash was paid for it,
and a deed was given to the Bishop Col. S.L. Fremont & Hon. George Davis,
Trustees of the Diocese of East Carolina. The lots contains one half
acre and the Deed therefor was registered Oct. 19th 1885 in
Book No. 17 Pages 303 & 304.
April 1890 a half acre lot adjoining the above mentioned
was purchased of Mrs. Laura E. Blackwell for $75.00 a deed therefor was
given to Bishop Watson, Col. S.L. Fremont & Hon. Geo. Davis, Trustees of
the Diocese of East Carolina. Deed recorded May 6th 1890
in Book No. 19 of Deeds on page 481.
The present Trustees of this Diocese are Rt. Rev. Bishop
Strange, John Wilder Atkinson & William Calder, all of Wilmington, N.C.
June 16, 1896
