Engelhard Assembly
of God Church
1950-1975
One of the two Assembly of God Churches in Hyde County is located near Roper Lane which adjoins the business area of Engelhard. This is a mission church of the Assembly of God Church at Wanchese. A plot of land was purchased for the construction of a house of worship for the local congregation in 1952. The new church building was completed about 1953. The church is a frame building covered with asbestos siding, a gray-shingled roof, and has stained-glass windows. A parsonage was added to the building around 1970. Prior to the construction of the present church building, the local congregation used a building that was located on Golden Street near Far Creek. It is not known when services were first held there. The Assembly of God Church in Engelhard was first established around 1950. It is said that early group meetings of this church's denomination were held on the store porch of a local business establishment and in homes. It is also noted that a portable tabernacle (tent) was at one time used for the church services prior to obtaining the building which stood on Golden Street. The tent was located on a piece of land which lies beside Far Creek in Charlie Gibbs' front yard. The Reverend A.W. Price was the first minister of this church. In addition to being a house of worship in supporting the spiritual needs of its members, the Assembly of God Church building served the people of the community as a station for periodic Health Clinics. For many years, the County Public Health Nurse conducted immunizations for young children in the church building.
