History of New Lake
Christian Church - Ponzer, NC
1890 - 1961
New Lake is an isolated settlement in the western section of Hyde County. At one time there were many families living in the community, but at the present time it is sparsely settled. The membership of the New Lake church met at the local school and on October 26, 1890 with 26 members, it was enrolled by the North Carolina Christian Missionary Convention. W.J. Dunbar was listed as the first clerk by this congregation. In 1892 the church Sunday School was organized enrolling 25 members and five teachers: D.B. Squayers was superintendent and C.K. Squayers was secretary. In 1893 there were 32 members in the Sunday School, and six teachers with C.J. Sawyer as superintendent and A.N. Dunbar as church secretary. Although records are not available, it must be assumed that the membership at New Lake continued to grow because the church was served by ministers periodically over the years. The last known minister was W.F. Armstrong.

Armstrong 1944-1948 The New Lake congregation continued to meet in the local school building and never erected a church building of their own although Daniel B. Squayers, Caswell J. Squayers, William I. Cahoon, James H. Cahoon and Josephus McGowan, as Trustees of the Church of Christ of New Lake, had been deeded a 1/2 acre plot of land on September 4, 1894 by Nellie J. Harris, Nancy G. Cahoon, Mary J. Cahoon, William I. Cahoon, James H. Cahoon and Annie E. Cahoon. (Hyde Deed Book 21; pgs. 593-594)
H.C. Bowen wrote from the field in November 1904: "A zealous preacher could increase our strength at New Lake." J.B. Satterthwaite ministered there 21 years later and stated: "I made a house-to-house canvass at New Lake in July and August 1925. I baptized some. I ordained one elder and one deacon, organized a Ladies Aid Society, and I plan to organize a Bible School there, if possible." December 17, 1905.
In August 1928 it was reported: "Roe L. Harris of Fairfield, recently held a fruitful revival at New Lake. He preached strong Gospel sermons to them driving his car over almost impassible roads through the boggy savannahs."
In 1961, the membership was reportedly 50. Since the congregation had not met for some years prior to 1961 it is quite likely that this figure is not correct. This church is now defunct.
