YATES, Doris D. Spencer
Doris D. Yates, formerly of the 1300 block of Oak Park Avenue, passed away on November 13, 2016. Born in Engelhard, NC, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Maude Spencer; and the widow of Steven P. Yates. She was preceded in death by her son, Gary Allen Yates. She is survived by her two daughters, Dolores Kirby and her husband, Jim, of Chesapeake, VA and Gloria Jean Szutenback and her husband, Larry, of Suffolk, VA; her daughter-in-law, Kathy Yates of King George, VA; two granddaughters, Robin Kuss and her husband, Greg, of King George, VA and Stephanie Perrotta of Chesapeake, VA; great-grandchildren, Theresa Marie Hardman of King George, VA and Sophia Perrotta of Chesapeake, VA; a sister, Vivian Estes of Virginia Beach, VA; and many nieces and nephews. Doris will be dearly missed by her family, friends, and neighbors. She was a devoted homemaker, a long-time member of the Bayview Seniors Club and a participant in many community affairs. The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel on Friday, Nov. 18, 2016, from 4 to 6 p.m. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, 2016, in the funeral home chapel. YOUNG, Addie Marie
SWAN QUARTER - Addie Marie Young, 67, of Quarter Road, died April 3 at Cross Creek Health Care. Born in Hyde County, she was the daughter of Arnettia Spencer and Major Young. In addition to her parents, she is survived by a son, Alton Young of Engelhard; two brothers: Cola Young of Engelhard and Tennison Moore of Delaware; and two sisters: Martha Burrus of Engelhard and Mary Young of Brooklyn, N.Y. Funeral services were planned for Saturday, April 8 and burial was to take place in the Spencer Family Cemetery in Engelhard. Blair Funeral Service of Edenton is in charge of arrangements. YOUNG, Gary
ENGLEHARD - Gary YOUNG, 42, died Sunday, January 29, at his residence. Born in Beaufort County, Mr. Young worked as a packer in the seafood industry. He was the son of Tilson and Millie Young. In addition to his parents, Mr. Young is survived by two brothers: Rico and Roger Young, both of Kill Devil Hills; six sisters: Charlene Howard of Manteo, Lillian and Monica Blanchard and Tyra Harris, all of Wilson, Almigine Selby of Chesapeake, Va. and Nolia Shackleford of Saratoga. Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 4 at 2 p.m. at Mattamuskeet High School with the Rev. George Merrick officiating. Burial followed in the Brown Memorial Cemetery. YOUNG, Lida
YOUNG WOMAN A SUICIDE - Miss Lida YOUNG, 24 years old, of Fairfield, Hyde County, disappeared from her home Saturday night and her lifeless body was found in the canal near the wharf at Fairfield Sunday morning. There was no evidence of foul play and the young woman is supposed to have committed suicide in a fit of despondency over ill health. YOUNG, SR., Walter Luther
NORFOLK - Walter Luther YOUNG, SR., 76, of Rose Valley Road, a retired dairyman and farmer, died July 9, 1992, in a Norfolk hospital. Mr. Young was born in Hyde County, N.C. He was a member of High Street United Methodist Church; Knights of Pythias; Dairy Herd Improvement Association; American Guernsey Cattle Club; Ducks Unlimited; Delaware Hunt Club; Franklin Moose Lodge; and Woodmen of the World. Survivors include his wife, Maude Griffin Young; a daughter, Annie Lee Duff of Suffolk; a son, Walter L. Young Jr. of Courtland; a sister, Janie Lee Green of Virginia Beach; two brothers, R.L. Young Jr. of Suffolk and Beale Young of Smithfield; 7 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Southampton Memorial Park by the Rev. David Erickson and the Rev. Reginald Warren. Friends may join the family at 25296 Delaware Road, Courtland. Wright Funeral Home is handling arrangements. YOUNG, Sr., Willie E.
NORFOLK - Willie E. Young Sr., 84, of the 3000 block of Henrico St., passed away April 14, 2007, at Sentara Leigh Hospital. He was born Nov. 22, 1922, to the late Larry and Martha Young in Hyde County, North Carolina. Willie served two years in the U.S. Army during World War II and received his honorable discharge in 1945. He later became employed at Buryn, Owen and Eaton where he worked as a foreman for 40 years. He was predeceased by his infant grandson, Donnie Riddick. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 54 years, Jean A. Young; eight children, Donald L. Riddick of Norfolk, Willie E. Young Jr. of Elizabeth City, N.C., Labeeb Salaam Sr. (Velma) of Virginia Beach, Curtis V. Young Sr. (Juanita) of Norfolk, Clarence A. Young (Crystal) of Chesapeake, Phyllis Young, Belinda Hampton and Ralph A. Young (Sonya), all of Norfolk; two sisters, Blanche Blount (Earle) of Norfolk and Edna Linton of Suffolk; 26 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and lifelong friends. A service will be held today at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Metropolitan Funeral Service, 7246 Granby St. Pastor Antonio R. Woolard will officiate. Interment will be at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk. Family and friends will assemble at 3608 Don Court, Norfolk, one hour prior to the service for the procession to the chapel. ZABAWA, Lyda Lee Fulford
ROCKY MOUNT - Lyda Lee Fulford ZABAWA, 96, passed away Saturday, November 20, 2004. She was born September 1, 1908 in Englehard, NC, daughter of the late Otis Carl Fulford and Annie Laurie Jennette Fulford. Mrs. Zabawa was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Joseph Lawrence Zabawa; one sister, Gretchen Fulford Brittain. She leaves to cherish her memory, one daughter, Gretchen Zabawa Soden of Rocky Mount; one granddaughter, Annie-Laurie Bittinger and husband, John of Rocky Mount; one grandson, Marshall Soden of Southern Pines; one great-granddaughter, Crystal Jennette Neville of Rocky Mount; one great-grandson, Ethan R. Neville of Rocky Mount. A private family graveside service was held Monday, November 22, 2004 at 2 p.m. at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. The family requests no flowers, but that memorials may be made to the charity of ones choice. Arrangements are entrusted to Bowling Funeral Home & Crematory, 661 English Road, Rocky Mount, NC.
