John Henry Clay Berry
(February 7, 1848 - January
10, 1948)
John Henry Clay Berry was the son of John Berry, Jr. (1817-1898) and Sarah Ann "Sallie" Stotesbury (1817-1881). He married Mary Ann "Polly" Harris, daughter of Seth Blount Harris and Elizabeth Ann Fisher, on December 19, 1872 in Hyde County. To this union were born the following children: Betty Adella Berry (1874-1948), Eula Ree Berry (1875-1966), Janie Lee Berry (1878-1954), John Madison Berry, Sr. (1881-1974), Reubin Walton Berry (1888-1966), Carlos Randolph Berry (1889-1952), and Annie Laura Berry (1893-???).
Mr. and Mrs. Berry established their home with her father, a home which they later inherited. Today the house is owned and occupied by Laura Berry Cahoon, the only living one of Mr. and Mrs. Berry's seven children.
Mr. Berry was a farmer who, like many farmers, supplemented his income by working on the water and doing carpentry work. Millicent (Harris) Lupton remembers watching her grandfather Berry build coffins. John Henry Clay Berry and his wife, Sallie, are buried in Soule Cemetery in Hyde County.
