NOTES:
** In the 28 pages of this estate and in the Poorhouse records of Hyde County John Abell's middle initial looked like a "W" and at times like a "U". I do not know his birth date nor who his parents were but there was a Uel (also seen as Ewell in places) Abell in Beaufort County who died on Jan. 29, 1835 at the age of 46. His obituary listed him as "a substantial planter and an excellent man, leaving a widow and several children". This "Uel Abell" could possibly be the father of the John U. Abel in this estate.
** John U. Abell was listed as an 1858 graduate of the medical department from the University of the City of New York. After his graduation he came back to Hyde County and married Martha Elizabeth Credle on June 7, 1859.
** In April 1860 Dr. John U. Abel was appointed to attend the poor of St. George's parish as their physician for the sum of $150.00.
** By June 26, 1860 when the Hyde census was taken, 17 year old Elizabeth Abel appeared to be widowed and was living in the home of her brother, George Credle, who was made adm'r. on her deceased husband's estate. She remarried on January 26, 1869 to Richard Winslow Howard. She and Richard are buried in Soule Cemetery in Hyde County.
