March 1, 1870 - Mortgage deed from William T. Ashley to H.W. Wahab for $530.72 made in 3 notes for land in Currytuck Township for 50 acres on the N.W. side of Jordan's Creek, it being the tract of land bought by W,T. Ashley from H.W. Wahab & wife on Feb. 28, 1870.  Said sum is due in 3 separate notes with interest from March 1, 1870 and to be paid in full by Jan. 1, 1874.  /s/ Wm. T. Ashley

Feb. 23, 1874 - Thomas R. Jarvis petitions the court for Letters of Guardianship of Mary E. Ashley, a minor orphan.  He further states that the value of the estate is about $400.00 and the rents and profits amount to nothing.  /s/ Thos. R. Jarvis.  Bond of $800 is made by Thomas R. Jarvis as guardian to Mary E. Ashley with Sam'l. Snell, R.D. Harris, George Dixon and Asa J. Smith as securities.

Feb. 27, 1874 - Application for Letters of Administration on the estate of William T. Ashley was made by Thomas Brown.  He states that Dorcas Ashley, the widow, has relinquished her right to administer on her husband's estate  in favor of sd. Brown.  He further states that the value of sd. estate is about $300.00 and that Dorcas Ashley and Mary E. Ashley (minor) are entitled as his only heirs.  /s/ Thomas Brown

Administrator's Bond of $600.00 on the estate of William T. Ashley, dec'd., was signed by Thomas Brown, adm'r., and George Credle as his security.  Sd. Brown states that he believes that William T. Ashley died without leaving a will and that he will administer on his estate to the best of his ability.  /s/ Thomas Brown

Thomas Brown as adm'r. of the estate of William T. Ashley seeks to obtain an order from court to sell perishable property for cash.  The order was recorded the same day.  /s/ Saml. R. Sadler, Probate Judge

Mar. 18, 1874 - Commissioners allot one years support to Dorcas Ashley, widow of William T. Ashley, and two children.  They set off $296.00 but there was a deficiency of $204.00 to bring it to $500.00.  /s/ Sam'l. L. Snell, Dallas Wahab, J.B. Jordan, Commissioners

Spring Term 1874 - H.W. Wahab, plaintiff, vs. Thomas Brown, adm'r. of William T. Ashley, defendant - Wahab states that on Mar. 1, 1870 William T. Ashley executed several bonds--one for $200.00 payable 10 months after the date with interest; 2nd note for $200.00  22 months after date with interest; and the 3rd note for $130.72 with interest.  The purpose of securing said bonds was a mortgage on real property in Currytuck Township containing about 50 acres.  It was on the N.W. side of Jordan's Creek.  No part of the principal or interest of said bonds and mortgage has been paid except $30.72 paid on March 25, 1870 and $169.49 paid on Mar. 1, 1873.  He asks that the land be sold in order to pay the debt.  Judgment was found in favor of the plaintiff.  The defendant is to pay the plaintiff $439.20, the principle sum due.  If the defendant defaults in such payment on or before May 15, 1874 then he be foreclosed on redemption in the land mentioned and the Clerk of Court is hereby appointed to sell the same for cash.  /s/ W.A. June 23, 1874 - H.W. Wahab, plaintiff, states that at Spring Term 1874 a judgment was obtained and Sam'l. R. Sadler, Clerk of Court as commissioner was to sell the lands mentioned in the pleadings but he died before the day appointed for the sale.  Petitioner prays for an appointment of someone suitable as a replacement.  H.D. Gibbs was appointed as commissioner to proceed with the sale.  On Aug. 1, 1874 H.W. Wahab became the purchaser for $450.25 being the highest bidder.

Nov. 18, 1874 - Thomas Brown, plaintiff, vs. George Richards, defendant - Plaintiff says that as adm'r. of William T. Ashley he is entitled to the immediate possession of 250 pounds of seed cotton and 7 barrels of corn which is wrongfully detained by George Richards; that the actual value is about $30.00.  The property was seized the next day, Nov. 19, 1874.

Apr. 9, 1875 - Thomas R. Jarvis, plaintiff, guardian to Mary E. Ashley, vs. Thomas Brown, adm'r. of Wm. T. Ashley who was executor of Elizabeth Rew - The plaintiff states that William T. Ashley, executor of Elizabeth Rew, late of Hyde County, was the father of plaintiff's ward, Mary E. Ashley and that he died intestate sometime in the year of [nothing written] leaving the ward as his only heir; that after the death of said intestate Thomas Brown, the defendant, obtained letters of administration upon the estate of William T. Ashley, executor, and possessed himself of the personal property belonging to the ward who heired from the estate of her grandmother, Elizabeth Rew; that plaintiff has frequently appealed to the defendant and requested he come to a full accounting of the personal estate & effects of said intestate and said ward which defendant has refused to comply.  The plaintiff demands an account of the personal estate & effects and an account of debts & funeral expenses and that the plaintiff be paid his distributive share and the full amount due said ward.  /s/ Thos. Aug. 2, 1875 - Thomas R. Jarvis, guardian of Mary E. Ashley, plaintiff, vs. Thomas Brown, adm'r. - Order to arrest Thomas Brown and hold him on $100.00 bail.  /s/ George I. Watson, CSC

Aug. 30, 1875 - Thomas Brown, adm'r. of W.T. Ashley, dec'd., and his security, Hezekiah Brown, are summoned to Court on Sept. 7, 1875 to answer a complaint filed by Thomas R. Jarvis, guardian of Elizabeth Ashley.

Nov. 1877 - Petition of Thomas R. Jarvis, guardian of Mary E. Ashley, states that the interest on the estate is not sufficient for her support and asks that he be able to pay her out of the principal as she may need.  He states she is 8 years of age.

June 6, 1878 - Thomas R. Jarvis has failed to renew his bond as guardian to Lizzie Ashley [Mary Elizabeth Ashley] as is required by law. It is ordered by the Probate Court to appear on July 1, 1878 and renew bond.  /s/George I. Watson, Probate Judge

NOTE: William T. Ashley married Dorcas Brown in Hyde Co. on Dec. 27, 1870.
