Thornton W. Mitchell's North Carolina Wills: A Testator Index, 1665-1900 was published in 1987 by the Genealogical Publishing Company and followed it up later with revisions and additions. With his kind permission, he has allowed the extraction of the Hyde County wills, out of the nearly 75,000 statewide wills, for publication on this Web page.
In his introduction Mr. Mitchell states that wills or copies of wills were not sought in private papers, principally because of the difficulty of finding them. The large and important repositories at the University of North Carolina, Duke University, and East Carolina University, as well as the private collections in the State Archives undoubtedly contain wills, however, they were not included within the scope of this present index.
Mrs. Ellen A. Williams' In the Name of God, Amen! Abstracts of Hyde Co., N.C. Wills Probated 1709 through 1775, was published in 1989 by the Hyde County Historical Society. This work was used when it differed somewhat from Mr. Mitchell's book. These differences are indicated by an asterisk (*) and deal mainly with the differences in surname spellings or when it included information not included in Mr. Mitchell's book.
