Company K, 1st Regiment N. C. Troops (6 months, 1861)

This company was composed of men from Lincoln and Orange counties. Those from Lincoln County enlisted at This company, originally known as the "Lincoln Guards," enrolled for active service at Lincolnton, Lincoln County, on April 25, 1861. After organizing, the company left for Raleigh and arrived there on May 1, 1861. In an order to detail men for guard duty on May 2, the company was referred to as "Lincoln Guards." On May 3, in an order to report to the Camp of Instruction for a parade, the company was referred to as the "Star Guard." When mustered into state service on May 13, 1861, the company was referred to as the "Southern Stars" and became Company K of this regiment. After that date the company functioned as a part of the regiment, and its history for the war period is recorded as a part of the regimental history.

The information contained in the following roster of the company was compiled principally from company muster rolls which included the muster-in roll dated August 31, 1861, covering the period May 13-August 31, 1861, and muster rolls for the periods of April 25-May 14, 1861; May 14-June 30, 1861; and July-August, 1861. No muster rolls were found for the period after August, 1861. In addition to the company muster rolls, Roll of Honor records, receipt rolls, hospital records, prisoner of war records, and other primary records, supplemented by state pension applications, United Daughters of the Confederacy records, and postwar rosters and histories, all provided useful information.

Discharged September 20-21, 1861, by reason of injury received "with a pick on the embankment at York-town" and "before it was cured he was taken with a severe cough, then with measles, then the chills and fever, and the surgeon says he has chronic diarrhoea."
