This male that was between the age of 60 - 70 was probably the father of either Thomas or Michel.
The daughters would have been Elizabeth and Nancy. This would put Thomas at the age of 32 and Michel age 23.
There were no other listings after 1840, in Lincoln County, for Thomas and family. It is believed they moved to Catawba County sometime after 1840.

Sidney Austin Williams son of Thomas Williams and Michel Caldwell was married Oct 1, 1870 in Lincoln County, North Carolina to Margaret Catherine Laney, She was born in Lincoln County, North Carolina to Noah H. Laney and Nancy Catherine Kate Crouse. They lived in the Pumkin Center area in 1900. Sid Williams occupation was listed as farm laborer until the 1880 census of Catawba County, the family had moved to Maiden where Sid and all the Children, except Isaac, Etta and Laura worked in a cotton mill. The youngest children went to work when they were old enough. Children were required to work in the mill around age seven or eight although they had to stand on stools. If the children of those who lived in mill houses were not sent to work they had to move somewhere else. Emma and Florence went to work at the same time when the family moved to the mill village. They worked twelve hours a day and earned 5 cents a day. All of Sids children worked in the cotton mill although most learned other ways to make a living. Before the census of 1900 Sid had built a house and moved his family to East Main Street, directly across from the present home of Streta Williams. Maggie Laney Williams brother, Noah lived beside then in the house where Calvin and Maggie Laney lived, now the site of a grocery and a drug store.
Sid Williams enjoyed reading the Bible and discussing it with anyone who passed. Whenever I ask about Sid , comments were made that most of the time he sat under a tree or on the porch and read his bible. Whenever he lived near Pumpkin Center, he cut wood and sold it. In reading about life in the 1800's and early 1900's a number of men earned a living by wood farming. The town dwellers had to buy wood and someone had to supply it.

Sarah Ann Williams never married but stayed with people to help care for their babies and the household. As long as she was healthy enough to care for the families with new babies, she had a home with family members and others, she was turned away by numerous realtives until Ed and Etta Williams Took her in. She died in thier home and was buried in an unmarked grave at Macedonia Cemetery.(from research of Mary Elizabeth Rink Harbinson and Brenda Joyce Rink Witherspoon.)

He used the name of Virgil Coleman until the birth of his first child, Pauline. He then used the name Thomas Coleman Williams. Parents listed on the death certificate are Coleman S. Williams and Delcania Potts. Parents Listed on his marriage license are Isaac C. & Augusta Potts, which it turns out, are the same people.

Florence worked as a spinner in the Cotton Mill. They rented and farmed the land of his deceased father, but they returned to Maiden where they worked in the mills. They lived in down town Maiden, on Union Street in the Mill Village near the Old Mill that was on the north side of Main Street. Later they lived in the house that eventually became the home of Mack and Pearl Williams on North Sixth Street between East Maiden and Union Streets, They bought a house at 719 East Boyd St. were they always had a garden and some livestock. They had a muscadine vine at one side of the garden, When they had a goose and a gander, everyone had to move fast. They had a sheep for a year or more. They were thrifty hard working people.When Florence met Bratt he had been drinking, she refused to have anything to do with him. Next time they met he was sober, so they began courting, After their marriage , they lived near her teetotaler relatives to keep her husband and her sons away from the temptation of Alchol.
Florence was a Republican and finally convinced Bratt to change parties during World War I. She told him that a vote for that Democrat would mean helping fight a war. He voted for the Democrat and was notified to report to the Army when the war ended. She said that he always voted Republican after that.
They belonged to the First Baptist Church of Maiden and attended regularly . The men sat on the east side of the church where they had attended Sunday School. The women sat in the middle, Some of the youger couples sat together in the main section or on the west side of the church. Everyone else tried to get a good seat on the back pews. Church was a religious and a social meeting. After church people would stand around in the church yard and talk before going home to Sunday dinner.
Florence learned to read the bible and loved to sing. She loved her family and visited with them whenever she could. She would spend time cleaning the graves of her parents and close friends. Florence would visit her sister Laura, who lived across the street. She was crossing the street after one
of her visits when a speeding car driven by Dr. John James came over the hill and struck her. With broken bones and a cut mouth from her broken false teeth she lived for about a week before dying. She died in Catawba Memorial Hospital. Bratt lived along until one morning he was found dead in bed.

I knew Uncle Marion and Aunt Susie Well. Our house was only a short distance away, My sister and I would walk to Clifton Hewitts store to buy candy when we were children, We lived on South 8th ave. and then the road was not paved it had more hills than it does today. Uncle Marion also grew cotton and we would pick cotton in the field across from where Evelyn and Charlie Cresimore, mothers sister lives today. Our dad,
Ned Rink used to own the land that was across the road from Uncle Marions until he sold some of it to Evelyn and Charlie to build a house on. Uncle Marion and Aunt Susie had corn shucking which drew relatives and friends, although most of the people in the area were related to them. When they mowed and thrashed the wheat it was a main attraction, Still remember those wheat mites that would bite you in the summer. For a few years he worked as a school custodian. He also farmed the Sugar Farm Land near what is now the Maiden Country Club, and my father
Ned Rink owns. A mule drawn wagon was used to transport the family to the Sugar Farm for cotton picking. hoeing vegetables and taking care of the animals. They were a hard working family.
On snowy mornings, one of Uncle Marions sons came with a mule pulling a wooden sled that cleared the driveways, walkways, paths to the barn and other buildings, I remember the barn sat beside the road. They were active in the First Baptist Church in Maiden all their lives.

I remember Mama Laur and Papa well, this is what we called them as a child. As children we used to play with tags he used for records of his dogs.
He was a barber. We would play in his yard and spend lots of time at his house. It is a small little white house on Boyd Street in Maiden. Flossie one of his daughters lived just across the road with her husband Will, So we spent lots of time going from place to place, If you went across a big pasture your house was in back and to the right of their house. We could see if from where we lived. I collected stamps at the time and they used to go through and give me lots of stamps.

Clifton had a brain hemorrage when he was around 7 or 8 years old and had to relearn most of the things that he had learned prior to the hemorrage. He attended school at the South Fork Academy but didn't graduate. As a young man, he worked at Union Groceries for his uncle Ike Williams, sold insurance for a while and sometimes worked in the grocery store and a cotton mill. He bought the stock in Jake Taylors grocery store and named it A. C. Hewitt's Grocery. He bought the land and buildings from Everette Mauney. The store was on the corner of East Main Street and South Sixth Street about half way between town and East Maiden.
He enjoyed working with animals, he owned , trained hunted and traded bird dogs. He raised and sold Tumbling pigeons and quail. He kept opossums, goats, hunting dogs, rabbits, chickens, turkey, cows and pigs over the years.
As a result of failing health and competition from super markets, Clifton finally closed his store. He and Colene refused to declare bankruptcy because they felt obligated to pay his bills. He went to work in the cotton mill and she returned to the glove mill. They worked hard and paid off all their debts. He had a book filled with charge accounts of customers. Many former customers were honest and paid their accounts, but many never paid their bills. He lost lots of money because of those customers. He was an honest man. Clifton was an excellent marksman and bird hunter. He was quite popular as a trainer and hunter. He worked until his failing health forced him to retire. He had emphysema, arthritis, kidney problem and pace maker because of a heart problem.

Roy and Murlee were buying a house at 704 East Boyd St. they rented part of thier house to Clifton and Colene Hewitt . They sold the ecquity in the house to Clifton and Colene. I always love to go to see Flossie, I remember sitting on her front porch and watching people go up and down main street in Maiden. She had a piano I couldn't play but loved to go make noise on it anyway. Marie her sister would sit down and play and sing. The thing I will always remember is her coconut and whipped cream cakes, She loved to bake them and pound cakes. She was a wonderful cook and would bring something to us as long as she was able to do so. She could cook the best pinto beans in town.
Her brother Burgin lived next door to her so we would play with his kids, Geneva, Diane, Jerry and Gerald. Being from a very small town we lived close to each other and would see the family often. Flossie and Will had beautiful camelia bushes and loved to care for their yard and garden. Will would always try to compete with his neighbor to see who could have the first tomato's every summer. L.R. Williams was his neighbor. This went on for lots of years. He always had a beautiful garden. I remember Will gave our son Barry a cigar when he was only two years old about 1962, and Barry puffed on this cigar and it never made him sick. Will thought that was really funny. Always love to smell his cigars. He worked at Carolina Mills for many years.

Marie Williams Spencer 80 of West F. Street Died March 31, 1997 at her residence. Born May 28, 1916 in Catawba County, she was a daughter of John Avery Williams and Laura Elizabeth Sigmon.
A member of Winklers Grove Baptist Church in Hickory she was a former co-owner and operator of Spencer Hosiery Mill and was employed by Wester Steer for the last 15 years. She was preceded in death by her husband Buford Lee Spencer, a son Nelson Spencer a brother Burgin Williams and a sister Trilby Rink.
Survivors include two sons Ronald Lee Spencer of North Myrtle Beach South Carolina and Charles Wayne Spencer of Newton, two daughters Jeanie Spencer Murray of Newton and Ann Spencer McCrary of Statesville, three sisters Flossie Beard, Ornah Jordan and Evelyn Cresimore of Maiden. Nine grandchildren and Three great Grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Dale Faulkenbury at 2p.m. Thursday at her church.
Buriel will be in the Church Cemetery.
the family will be at the church tonight from 6:30 to 9.

Trilby Estelle Williams Rink was our mother she passed away a few years ago but will never be forgotten. She was born and raised in Maiden, North Carolina only less than a mile from where she died. She married our father and raised Brenda and my self, Mary Elizabeth. Our Grandmother Mary Etta Setzer Rink lived with us and helped her take care of us. My mother worked in a knitting mill and later open Rinks Florist in Maiden, She was an Icon in the town. She loved the flower business and this was her social life as well. She knew everyone and everyone knew her. She had the business until Cancer took her from us. She will always be loved and deeply missed.
I remember so many things about her. She helped us build play houses in the grove of pines in the back of the house and make all kinds of doll cloths for us. She used to make doll cloths and sold them a a leading department store in Charlotte. She love to sew and make us cloths. We used to get them out of feed sacks when we were children, this was something we looked forward to helping pick out the sacks that would become our cloths later when the feed was gone. We used to quilt out under the carport in the summer and Mamaw and mother would let us help. We always had a garden and loved her homemake vegestable soup. We had to learn to love the oyster stew and fried oysters when we were children. Dad used to eat them raw. Our house was next to Mandy and George Williams and we used to go see them all the time. We had creeks that went on both sides of the house so we would play in the creeks and slide down the hill on dads mink board in the snow. I can remember mother helping dry apples on the top of the car shed in the summer and we loved to go eat them out from under the screen wire. As children we had chickens, ducks, piegons, pigs, cows, horses and lots of fun thing to do. We loved to ride on the sled when dad would take lime over to the fields, I got my finger nails drug off several times getting them under the sled. Painful memories there. Brenda was 3 years younger than me so I was dating and into stuff and when she got that age it was really tough for her having a older sister that rebelled part of the time. Mother loved later in years to go with Brenda and make porcelin dolls in Hickory, She made beautiful dolls which we will always cherish. She also made all the cloths for them and was very good with her hands doing small work. The flower shop was the love of her life work wise and then my dad was the love of her life always. She looked after him , spoiled him and took good care of him for over 50 years. She was a wonderful mother, artist, homemaker, wife and friend to all of us. She is sadly missed and greatly loved.

Ned Andrew Rink was born at 1:30am on the morning of Oct. 18, 1916, Elizabeth Crouch was the mid wife, in Hickory, North Carolina, Mother Mary Etta Setzer Rink and James E. Rink. He had half brothers and sisters from another marriage of his father and 3 brothers and 1 sister from the marriage of Mary Etta and James. His father was killed from a fall off a truck when he was only a little over 5 years of age. His mother took the money she had from the estate and bought a house and land in the Balls Creek area of Catawba County. He had a brother at the time that was only 6months old. Life was not easy for the family with lots of children and step children to raise and no father.
My father tells us they lived off of pumpkin pap and poor Doo which was a water gravey. His mother raised the children helping work in a store and raise food on the farm. In her later years she lived with us until she died. He married Trilby Estelle Williams and lived in Newton for about a year and then moved to Maiden where he still lives on about 25 acres of land , His love is raising homing pigeons and cows. He takes trips with the Cattleman's Association all over the country. He also enjoys watching his BBT stock on a daily basis. He has 2 children and 4 grand children, Michael Witherspoon, David Harbinson, Barry Harbinson , Steven Harbinson and 5 great grand children, Jenna Witherspoon Morgan Witherspoon, Laura Harbinson, Clint Harbinson and Bevan Harbinson.[Setzer Good file.FTW]

Ned Rink is our father, he still lives in Maiden, North Carolina it is Feb. 2000.
He was born and raised part of his life in Hickory, North Carolina. After his father James died in a farming accident. His mother took her part of the estate and bought a house in Balls Creek for them. My father tells us he lived off of Pumkin Pap and Poor Doo. Poor Doo being a water gravey and haven't really found out the exact meaning of Pumkin Pap to this day. It was very hard in those days of the depression for them to exist. But sometimes this makes and brings families much closer to each other. This family has always been close through good and bad times. He married Trilby Estelle Williams our mother and I was born March 7, 1940 in a small house on Hwy. 16 out of Newton. When I was about a year old we moved to the house that my dad lives in, in Maiden North Carolina. I can remember when Brenda was born they knew I wanted a sister so at the Newton Hospital I was wearing a little blue coat with white trim on the sleeves. They brought out a boy and a girl and ask me which one I wanted.
They knew I wanted a sister so that was a good thing I picked the right one. I was only three but I have memories of this. I can also remember thinking my dad was going to have to go to the war, this was a very big thing in 1942. Everyone was upset he was going to have to go, but he didn't pass his physical and didn't have to go to the war. I remember the stamps and we had sugar and hard to get things around the house. Gas was really hard to get also we had to have stamps for that as well. Dad was a ulpholster for Southern Furniture Company for a lot of years and then my mother Trilby descided to open a flower shop. I was a teen ager at the time. Then she became very busy and dad started helping her in the shop. He has always been a very good flower designer as well. He then descided to build a green house and grow his own carnations and some other flowers this was lots of hard work, I can remember coming home from school and helping with flowers. Later I opened my own shop. Brenda descided to get in the medical field she was the smart one. The Flower business was a very hard and time consuming business. After mother died we closed the Flower Shop and dad now has cows and raises racing pegions. He goes on Cattlemen's Association Trips all over the U.S. and has seen lots of different states. He loves to fish at Myrtle Beach where Brenda and him have a mobile home there year round. They also have a tent at the Balls Creek Camp Ground where we had lots of fond memories all our life. We have now found his family in Germany back to 1598. We are very excited to find his ggggrandfather was Johann Frantz Rincke from Wickenrode, Germany and then 5 generation back from him all in Wickenrode. We now know where we come from on the Rink side. The spelling has been changed several times from Rinke, Rincken, Rincke, Ring, Rink, Rinck, and Rinks, But no matter what the name he is our father Ned Andrew Rink.
Dad remembers going to a Rink reunion at Mt. Olive Church when he was only about 4 years old. He also attended a Rink reunion Sept, 2002, 81 years after his first one with his sister Mona.
