{"id":316,"date":"2009-03-15T09:57:06","date_gmt":"2009-03-15T16:57:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ncgenweb.us\/martin\/?p=316"},"modified":"2009-03-15T09:57:06","modified_gmt":"2009-03-15T16:57:06","slug":"southern-claims-commission-footnote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncgenweb.us\/martin\/southern-claims-commission-footnote\/","title":{"rendered":"Southern Claims Commission @ Footnote"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the collections on Footnote are the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.footnote.com\/page\/71\/\">Southern Claims Commission<\/a> records; these are\u00a0records of people who had items taken by the U.S. government during the civil war and more than 20,000 claims were filed nationwide. \u00a0As of today, there were only three claims from individuals in Martin County:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Henry Churchill Hardison\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Alfred Jordan\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Nancy C. Padgyett<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Henry Churchill Hardison of Williamston<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Living in Williamston, at the time of his claim in 1872, Henry was 40 years old and had been residing in Martin County for 20 years. \u00a0Among the items taken from him included fodder, \u00a0over two thousand pounds of pork, and &#8220;one good horse&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-317 aligncenter\" title=\"hardisonhenrychurchill_scc\" src=\"https:\/\/ncgenweb.us\/martin\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/hardisonhenrychurchill_scc.jpg\" alt=\"hardisonhenrychurchill_scc\" width=\"500\" height=\"189\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ncgenweb.us\/martin\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/hardisonhenrychurchill_scc.jpg 500w, https:\/\/ncgenweb.us\/martin\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/hardisonhenrychurchill_scc-300x113.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 85vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">From his testimony, I learned that Henry had a brother in the Confederate army. \u00a0His witnesses for his claim were<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>his neighbor L.A. Ray, age 32, who lived 175 yards away from him<\/li>\n<li>James H. Ellison, age 39\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Miss Mary E. Layman, his sister<\/li>\n<li>John Watts, age 58\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>John S. Harrell, age 38<\/li>\n<li>John R. Lanier, age 47<\/li>\n<li>William Wyatt, age 65<\/li>\n<li>W.F. Crawford, age 40<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nancy J. Padgyett of Jamesville<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Her taken property included pork, chicken, sweet potatoes and cooking utensils. \u00a0It was taken by Col. Franklin of Plymouth. \u00a0She was 43 at the time of the claim. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-318 aligncenter\" title=\"padgyettt_scc\" src=\"https:\/\/ncgenweb.us\/martin\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/padgyettt_scc.jpg\" alt=\"padgyettt_scc\" width=\"500\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ncgenweb.us\/martin\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/padgyettt_scc.jpg 500w, https:\/\/ncgenweb.us\/martin\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/padgyettt_scc-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 85vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>From her claim, \u00a0it states that her husband died in August of 1863 and they had 4 children whose ages were between 7 and 15.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Her witnesses were<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<li>Alexander Brown, agd 39<\/li>\n<li>Harmon Modlin, age 58<\/li>\n<li>Ashly Modlin<\/li>\n<li>John W. Gardiner, age 21<\/li>\n<li>H.S. Cooper\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Sarah Modlin<\/li>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alfred Jordan of Williamston<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Alfred was 53 at the time of his claim. \u00a0He was from Williamston, but right around the time of the war lived in Bertie County for 4 years and in Washington County for 2 years. \u00a0He was born in Chowan County, NC. \u00a0 The names of Alfred&#8217;s witnesses is difficult for me to read, but names mentioned in his claim include Simon Swain, Stephen Jordan (no relation), \u00a0F.C. Miller, \u00a0John G. Mitchell, William S.
