HISTORY: | Peter R. Davis, b. 1776, was the son of Matthew Davis (1748-1826) and Mary Maddray (1752-aft Feb. 1827) of Warren Co., NC. Matthew, who was the son of Peter Davis and Amy ____ originally from Isle of Wight, Virginia, purchased his first property in Bute County on Great Fishing Creek on Possum Quarter in 1772. The progenitor of the Warren County family was Peter Davis Sr. (ca 1727- d. 1804 Warren Co.) who had moved his family to Granville County in 1754, the area which by 1764 was Bute County, and later became Warren County in 1779. After having 8 children, Amy, whose maiden name is unknown, died, and Peter married Hannah Turner, the sister of James Turner, owner of Bloomsbury Plantation, who became the Governor of North Carolina in 1802. Peter Sr. and Hannah had 5 children. The members of the Peter Davis family intermarried with many of the other prominent families in the area and as a result, most of these families were related to one another through many generations. Matthew and Mary were married about 1775 in Bute County and he also served in the Revolutionary War. They were the parents of six children - Peter R., Stephen, Nancy, Polly, Elizabeth and Rebecca. Peter R. Davis never married, and was known as the wealthy bachelor uncle to many in his family. In his will he left a large estate, which he divided up between his surviving siblings and his nieces and nephews. Peter Davis Sr. (ca 1727-1804) and Amy were the parents of: Matthew Davis (1748-1826) and Mary Maddray (1752-ca 1827) were
