Nicholas Bryar Massenburg, b. Apr. 5, 1806, at Mill Brook, Wake Co, NC, d. Oct. 25, 1867, Franklin Co.,NC, was the son of Cargill Massenburg (Sep. 29, 1768- d. Nov. 7, 1809) & Ann Bryar (b. Mar. 26, 1786- d. Apr. 13, 1815; Ann remarried in 1813 to Kimbrough Jones). Nicholas purchased 614½ acres of land on the waters of Fox Swamp & Mill Swamp on the North side of Halifax Rd. on Oct. 27, 1830 from George F. & William Freeman for $2800. He purchased another 14 acres in 1832, and 13½ acres in 1835.  On Dec. 8, 1831, he married Lucy Henry Davis (b. Oct. 11, 1811, d. Sep. 26, 1896) who was the daughter of Archibald Davis & Elizabeth J. Hilliard, and was the sister to Archibald H. Davis of Cypress Hall Plantation.  More land was purchased over the years, and in March 1838, construction began on expanding the earlier house. Massenburg kept a daily journal for many years, in which he recorded many of the days activities, house accounts, church info, tax records, family information, and Slave records. He also owned Egypt Plantation in Franklin Co., which he worked alongside with Woodleaf, where both workers and slaves were shared between the 2 plantations. In his journal covering the years 1834-1840, it is indicated that Egypt was the larger of the 2 plantations, containing 1312½ Acres of land.
