At the residence of Mr J C Devane, New Hanover county NC
of pneumonia, after an illness of seven days, on the
13th inst. Mrs Anne Julia Devane, consort of Captain
John Devane, at the advanced age of 82 years.
Also, at the same place, of pneumonia, on the 16th Miss
Julia Eliza Devane, eldest daughter of Mr John C Devane,
after a brief illness of seven days, at the age of 19
years.
Cut off in the very spring time of life, she has left a
large circle of relations and friends who mourn their
untimely bereavement. But she has lived as she wised to
die, a sincere Christian; and she bore with the meekness
and fortitue of one who felt that she had her treasure
laid up in heaven. Never was a murmer permitted to
escape her lips, from the time she was stricken down,
till the moment when death set his cold icy seal upon
her mortal existence forever.
From the moment she became aware that she must die, she
never ceased her admonitions to her brothers and sisters
to prepare, to rejoin her in heaven, to whose blessed
mansions, she said, she was going. She said repeatedly
that she was willing to die; that she had the soul
cheering consolationt hat she was about to meet her
heavenly father in peace. She had attached herself to
the baptist church, and evinced by her walk and
conversation through life, that her religion, was of
that character which affects the heart as well as the
head. Through life she was an affectionate and obedient
daughter, and a kind and loving sister.
It was truly remarked that she could say in language of
Scripture "O death, where is thy sting! O grave, where
is thy victory!"

Can we lay the dust on the sunny brow, and laughing lip,
and yet send not forth one sound or echo, from the
aching void within. No though vain all requiems and
fruitless, the loud wail, yet over the grave of the
loved, we must pour them forth and their virtues, memory
must speak.
Lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in death not
divided, life bore them together to their last earthly
resting place, and as we placed them in earth's bosom,
felt that there we laid beauty of spirit, of heart, and
of life never surpassed. The desolate home, the silent
fireside, and the sad hearts of their fond friends, bear
record deep and dark, of treasures life can never bring
again.

Murder
A most brutal murder as perpetrated in Duplin county on
the 27th ult. under the following circumstances: Mr
Henry Smith, residing near Strickland's Depot, had
endeavored, on the evening previous to the commission of
the murder, to whip some of his negroes for bad conduct,
but they resisted, and he failed in correcting them.
Next morning he started for a neighbor's house, a short
distance from his own, for the purpose of obtaining
assistance. Two of his negroes then working in a field
close by, suspecting their master's object, followed him
into a swamp through which he had to pass on this way to
this neighbour's, and there literally beat him to death
with a bludgeon. We understand one of the miscreants
stook sentinel at the edge of the swamp, whils the other
committed the horrid deed. Both of the negroes have been
committed to Duplin jail. Mr Smith, we understand, was a
respectable farmer and worthy citizen.

Drowned
On the 5th inst. Saturday last, a man was discovered
floating on the surface of the river, near Barry &
Bryant's wharf, in this town. When taken out of the
water, it was discovered that he had been dead some
time. The name of the unfortunate man was Benjamin
Gauge, believed to be a native of Wake county. (We think
he was from Raleigh.) Where he was drowned or under what
circumstances has not yet been ascertained. A coroner's
jury was summoned, but without eliciting any thing, we
believe. The verdict of the jury was, "that the deceased
came to his death by drowning." This, if we are not
mistaken, is the fourt man who has been drowned in our
river during the last few months.

Parish of Iberville, Louisiana, leaving no heirs of his
body in that state. He left considerable property and
the object of this publication is to ascertain who are
entitled to the succession fund: who are his heirs. It
is supposed that Mr Jones was a native of Wilmington NC,
and that he removed from this place in boyhood, leaving
behind him parents, and brothers and sisters. He died at

while absent from this place. This is a matter of

left considerable property. Those who may possess any

certain dishonest scoundrel by the name of John R Floyd,

Died
In this town on the 9th inst after a protracted illness
of more than a year, Miss Martha J Owen, eldest daughter
of Genl James Owen, aged 33 years.
It is due to the memory of the deceased to say that few
have discharged the relative duties of life with such
entire satisfaction or have so universally secured the
warm regard and affectionate confidence of a large
number of endeared friends. To the domestic cirle, of
which she was the presiding angel, and upon whose
counsel its members leaned with all the simplicity and
affection of children, her loss is irreparable. By the
Presbyterian Church, of which she has from early life
been a consistent and active member, her death will be
deeply felt. And over her grave many a tear will be shed
by others, besides those of her own church, long after
the green sod shall have grown upon it.
The hope that sustained her in life, formed the rock of
her strength in the last trying hour. During her
protracted and painful illness, not a murmur is known to
have escaped her lips. She trusted in the merits of
Jesus alone, for acceptance; and confidingly leaning
upon the bosom of the beloved, she "breathed her life
out sweetly there."
So fades a summer cloud away,
So sinks the gale when storms are o'er;
So gently shuts the eye of day,
So dies a wave along the shore.
Death, in whatever from he makes his appearance -
whether he strikes the young or the old - the rich or
the poor - is an appaling visitor to the human family.
But there are times and circumstances when his stroke is
more severly felt than at others, and when, were it not
for the sweet precepts of our holy faith teaches us,
that "whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth," poor, weak,
human nature would be inclined to quetion of this, has
just occured in our midst. Louis Highsmith Esq a man
loved and respected by all who knew him, was but a few
days ago, the doting father of a young and promising
family - today, the children of his love lie entombed in
the silent grave. In one short week, his three boys,
John Edmund, aged 8 years - David, aged 5 and Richard
Morgan, aged 3 years - all that heaven had blessed him
with - were cut off by the ruthless hand of death. Like
the early flowers of spring, whose delicate foliage is
nipped by an untimely frost, those sweet flowers of
human hope, and human afflictions, have been all, all
swept away by the hand of death.
The sympathy which this melancholy stroke of Providence
has excited in our community is deep indeed. May heaven
comfort the distressed father and mother, and enable
them to bear this dispensation of Providence, with
christian fortitude and meekness. - Upper Black River,
New Hanover county, Sept 3
At his residence in this county, on the 30th ult Robert
Henry Esq.
Mr Henry while in life won the esteem of all who had the
pleasure of his acquaintance, and will be lamented most
by those who knew him best. As a husband, friend and
father, he was kind, social and humane, as a christian
consistent and exemplary, as a neighbor obliging and
charitable. He has left a wife and seven children, with
a numerous circle of relatives and friends to mourn the
irreparable loss.

months.
I saw a flower springing forth;
I saw it preparing to bloom;
But the early frosts of spring time,
Have carried it to the tomb.
Eugene you were a darling child -
The joy and the price of my life;
From you a look, or a laugh, or a smile,
Would quell the darkest strife.
Your body to the dust I resign -
Your spirt to God I will
Your stay, in this dreary world
Was quick, and short, and still.
Your blooming cheeks and rosy lips,
O never shall I forget;
Your sparkling eyes and flaxen hair
Are in my memory yet.
And shall remain as fresh and green,
As when lat I smoothed your brow
Upon the fevered pillow of death;
But your spirit is with Jesus now.

of Mr Isaac Jessup, in the 61st year of her age.
In Robeson county on the 18th ult, Mr Angus McLean Sen,
in the 68th year of his age.
In this county, on the 20th ult, Elizabeth Jane, third
daughter of Mary Jane and Benjamin C Moore, aged 12
years and 8 months.
Thrice within a short time, has death entered this
family and numbered among its victims a bright and
lovely youth. It seldom falls to the lot of parents to
feel so sensibly the afflicting hand of Providence
bearing upon them, and have torn from their bosoms the
objects of their tender care and solcitude.
The deceased was amiable, kind hearted and affectionate,
endowed with all, the bloom of youthful promise, it is
truly afflicting that she not have been spared, that her
parents and society could have realized the fond,
expectations that her excellent qualities were so
calculated to inspire.
The bloom of youth was on her brown, and virtue in her
eye, but both alas! are faded now, by death's destroying
hand.
We deeply sympathize with the parents in this sad
bereavement but we know there is a balm for wounded
souls - the deceased, with her brother, who friended
her, more fully away of their accountability, expressed
a willingness to die, and it was the joy of the mother
to witness the triumph of her own instructions, in
performing the last wish of her dying children, to help
them upon their knees that they might pray to him who
said, 'suffer little children to come unto me, for of
such is the kingdom of Heaven.'"
