In the name of God, Amen….I Margaret I. Hand in the County of New
Hanover and State of North Carolina, being of sound mind and memory,
but considering the uncertainty of this frail and transitory life, do
therefore make, ordain, publish and declare this to be my Last
Will and Testament, in manner and form following, that is to say…
Item 1- I give and devise to my affectionate Brother
William J. Hand, six hundred and fifty dollars to be his and at his
disposal absolutely forever.
Item 2-- I give and bequeath to my affectionate
Sister Anne M. James six hundred and fifty dollars to be hers and at
her disposal absolutely forever.
Item 3-- I give and bequeath to my affectionate
Sister Martha J. Brown, a Negro slave named Holly, aged about 18 and
one Bureau to be hers and at his disposal absolutely forever.
Item 4-- I give and bequeath to my affectionate
Sister Julia E. Armstrong two hundred dollars to be hers and at her
disposal absolutely forever.
Item 5-- I give and bequeath to my affectionate
Brother Jeremiah Hand eight hundred dollars to be at his disposal
absolutely forever.
Item 6-- I give and bequeath to Hinton brothers and
Josephine Brothers one hundred fifty dollars to be equally divided
between them and to be theirs and at their disposal absolutely forever.
Item 7-- And that the expenses of Miss Mabrey
Bludworth be paid by James Brown through her natural life and that the
expenses for her support be deducted from my Estate.
Item 8-- I give and bequeath to Newkirk Southerland
and John W. Cowan Deacons of the Hopewell Church one hundred dollars to
be appropriated to the needy of that Church.
I nominate, constitute and appoint my said Brother-in-law James,
Executor of my Last Will and Testament. In testimony whereof, I,
Margaret I. Hand, have hereunto set my hand and seal this the 23rd day
of March AD 1858 in this the 47th year of my age.
