SNEADS FERRY -- Laura Lee Davis, born July 28, 1916, to the late Lester and Annie Norton, passed away on Sunday, July 27, 2008, at her home in Sneads Ferry. She was surrounded by her family.
Mrs. Davis has now joined her husband of 68 years, Theron Howard Davis, who passed away on February 6, 2004. But she is survived by their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Their four children include Tommy Davis and his wife Sadie of Sneads Ferry; Billie Ann Allen and her husband Joe of Shinnston, WV; Buddy Davis and his wife Necia of Sneads Ferry; and Carolyn Hostetler of Sneads Ferry.
They have eight grandchildren: Billy Davis and his wife Lisa; Stevie Davis and his wife Sherri; Warren "Buggs" Hostetler and his wife Stephanie; Thomy Hostetler and his wife Tammy; Joey Allen and Lacy; Jody Davis and his wife Vickie; Melissa Davis and Wayne; and Barbara Edens and her husband Steven.
Mrs. Davis is survived by 20 great-grandchildren including Lauren Gwynn, Ayrien and Rookie Davis; Ryan, Jordan, and Madison Davis; Eden, Tayler, and Zack Hostetler; Chris, Andy, and Alex Hostetler; Haley Allen and Haley Stealey; Hannah and Daniel Davis; and Miranda, Lee, Isaac, and Gracie Edens.
Mrs. Davis was not only "Mamaw" to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, but also to her two great-great-granddaughters, Kaya Gwynn and Meredith Hostetler.
Mrs. Davis was one of six children. Three of her sisters, Susie Hill, Mildred Carroll, and Margie Mitchell, and her brother Bill Norton have passed away. She is survived by her sister Peggy Bass.
For all of us who are a part of Laura Lee's family and life, she will be missed. But here are some of our favorite pieces of her life: gardening in her flowers, eating blueberry dumplings or biscuits and honey at the kitchen table, yelling "wipe your feet", picking strawberries, quilting from hooks in the ceiling, selling sandwiches and nabs to the old, drawbridge construction workers, and running Davis Seafood for 15 years.
Her greatest compliment is that she was a "fierce" mother; loving and protective. She has set a good example for us to follow-much like the good mother from Proverbs. We will do well to follow in her footsteps.
The family will hold her funeral service Tuesday at 4:00 at her home with the procession to the Davis Family Cemetery.
Arrangements are by Jones Funeral Home. Our heartfelt thanks go to Brenda, Angela, Chrissy, and Michelle, at Continuum Hospice. Donations can be made in her memory at Continuum Hospice (3391 Henderson Drive Extension, Jacksonville, NC 28546) or the American Cancer Society (P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718).
