Old Georgetown Cemetery

The following is a complete listing of the tombstones in the Old Georgetown Cemetery in Onslow County, NC.

Location In 1996, while working for the City of Jacksonville, I was cleaning land for a new city park. During a break, I stumbled (literally) across a long-forgotten cemetery in the Georgetown Area of Jacksonville. The cemetery is off US17 about 0.5 miles down Broadhurst Rd (the road extends only one way off of US17) and adjacent to the Georgetown Park. It sits on an elevated parcel of land, and gradually slopes downward to the right. In talking to area residents, I learned that the cemetery was in use until the early 1960s. One man, in his 70s at the time of the survey, recalled the cemetery being kept up when he was a child, but it has long been neglected. Today, there is a nearby cemetery (off nearby Erastus Lane) which has been referred to as Georgetown Cemetery. The gentleman with whom I spoke said that this must make this cemetery the ?Old Georgetown Cemetery.? It has been rumored that slaves were buried in the area to the right of the cemetery, but there is no proof to substantiate this. Although access is easy, one must keep in mind that under the many fallen trees, leaves and trash are both ticks and copperhead snakes! Following is not a complete list of those interred – many markers are nothing more than a stone or metal marker with indecipherable letters.
