George Mitchell<\/p>\n<p>Recorded in the State Gazette of North Carolina<\/p>\n<p>Edenton, North Carolina<\/p>\n<p>Names include:<br \/>\nColonel George Mitchell<br \/>\nRobert W. Snead<br \/>\nAbraham Mitchell, Jr.<br \/>\nKeziah Hunter<br \/>\nEmanuel Jones<br \/>\nMessrs. William Ferrand<br \/>\nEsaac Guion<br \/>\nWilliam Jones<br \/>\nWife and eight children, names not given.<\/p>\n<p>August 12, 1791  Died today at Onslow Court House, Colonel George Mitchell\u00a0of Onslow County.  Col. Mitchell and Robert W. Snead were competitiors for\u00a0representing Onslow County in the North Carolina Senate, and much ill will had\u00a0developed in the political race. \u00a0Mr. Snead was declared elected after the election was closed.  Mr. Snead was observed to call Col. Mitchell from amongst the people assembled at the\u00a0court house and to go with him into a thicket nearby.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly afterwards a pistol shot was heard, and people came running from\u00a0the court house. \u00a0The crowd found Col. Mitchell lying dead in the presence of Mr. Snead.  Two\u00a0wounds were found on Col. Mithcell  a pistol shot passing through his shoulder\u00a0and out below his ribs, the other wound on the skull from a heavy blow with the\u00a0butt of the pistol.  Mr. Snead was there apprehended and put in jail. \u00a0Col. Mitchell bore an unblemished character and was very active during the\u00a0Revolutionary War.  For many years he represented Onslow County in the General\u00a0Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>Col. Mitchell was the son of Abraham Mitchell, Jr., and Keziah Hunter of\u00a0the White Oak River.  After his father&#8217;s death, his mother married Emanuel\u00a0Jones, in whose home at Mount Pleasant near Swansborough Col. Mitchell grew up\u00a0to manhood.  For some years he was a clerk for Messrs. (William) Ferrand and\u00a0(Isaac) Guion at their store in Swansborough and was later a partner in trade\u00a0there with his half brother William Jones.  Col.
