The image of the postcard below was shared by Ben Henderson, whose ancestral roots run deep in Orange County. He wrote: “At the end of the Civil War, Gen. Joseph E. Johnston, was staying in Hillsborough at the home of Alexander Dixon, who was married to Elizabeth Wilson, my g-g-great aunt. Their home is the current Visitors Center in Hillsborough. Each day, Gen. Johnston would ride from Hillsborough to the Bennette place, where he would meet Gen. William T. Sherman to work out the terms of surrender of the Confederate States of America.” The postcard is dated 1911.
