James R. Wilkerson enlisted in Company D, 56th Infantry Regiment, NC, on October 23, 1864. He was wounded on March 25, 1865 at Fort Stedman, VA; hospitalized in Richmond, Va; and became a POW on April 3, 1865. He was transferred to Point Lookout Federal Prison in MD on May 2, 1865 and released on June 28, 1865.
