James McCanles was born in Pennsylvania. He married Jane McDowell there. According to land records, they were in Orange County by 1768 with a deed on Little River. According to NC Revolutionary Army Accounts, James McCanlas had claim #876 for service done the state. Two pounds and six shillings was paid to Jane McCanlas. It was passed by the General Assembly in December 1787. James McCanles’ will was probated in February 1784, so the money was delivered to his widow.
Their son David McCanles had a voucher for North Carolina State #4816, and voucher #6814 for “Sundries furnished and Cash paid the Militia of North Carolina Virginia and South Carolina as allow’d by the auditors of Hillsboro District the 11th May 1784” for 14 pounds, Specie.
