Hillsborough, NC<br \/>\n<em>This concludes the list of students enrolled at Burwell Female School,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Hillsborough, NC from the years of 1837-1857<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Who the Burwell&#8217;s were&#8230;..<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Reverend Robert Armistead Burwell (1802-1895) and his wife, Margaret Anna Robertson (1810-1871) were both Virginians of distinguished ancestry from the Petersburg area (Orange, Chesterfield, and Dinwiddie counties).<br \/>\nRobert was the son of Col. Armistead Burwell (1777-1841) and Mary Cole Turnbull, and traced his descent back to Major Lewis Burwell 1 (1621-1658) who came to Virginia in 1640.<br \/>\nMargaret Anna, or Anna as she was always called, was the daughter of Ann Spotswood (1792-1869) who had married William Bruce Robertson, a Scots merchant. Ann Spotswood was a direct descendant of Gov. Alexander Spotswood, Kt. of Virginia (1676-1740) and Anne Butler Brayne of London.<\/p>\n<p>The Burwell children:<\/p>\n<p>(1) Mary Susan Burwell&#8230;.b. 17 Dec 1832; d. Choctaw Co. Ala on 3 July 1859. Married Frederick Nash Strudwick 1 (1833-1890) in Hillsborough, NC on 27 June 1854.<\/p>\n<p>(2) John Bott Burwell&#8230;b. 3 Oct 1834; d. 26 Jan 1904. Married (1) Rebecca Irene Spragins (17 Dec 1957) (2) Mrs Mary F. Foster (died 5 Jan 1879) Educator, Principal, Peace Institute, Raleigh, NC<\/p>\n<p>(3)Ann Robertson Burwell&#8230;b. 31 Aug 1836; d &#8212;-, 1895. Married William H. Crow, Raleigh, NC (27 Sept. 1866)<\/p>\n<p>(4) Frances Armistead Burwell&#8230;b. 17 May 1838; d. 27 April 1855. Died on board steamer &#8220;Jamestown&#8221; returning from N.Y. to Norfolk, VA. Buried in Old Town Cemetery, Hillsborough, NC.<\/p>\n<p>(5) Armistead Burwell&#8230;.b. 22 Oct 1839; d, 13 May 1913. Married Ella M. Jenkins, Charlotte, NC. Known as Judge Burwell.<\/p>\n<p>(6) Robert Turnbull Burwell&#8230;b. 30 Nov 1841; d Feb or March 1864 of disease contracted in Army Camp.<\/p>\n<p>(7) William Robertson Burwell&#8230;b. 7 Nov 1843; d. unknown. Married his cousin, Jane Stewart McKenney. Est. wholesale drug firm in Charlotte, NC<\/p>\n<p>(8) James Webb Burwell&#8230;b. 7 July 1845; killed in battle of Cedar Creek, 19 Oct 1864. Buried near spot where he fell. Reinterred in Charlotte, NC 1886<\/p>\n<p>(9) Dandridge Spotswood Burwell&#8230;b. 18 June 1847; d.&#8212;&#8211;. Married Mary Louise Cooke 1883. Resided in Norfolk, Va.<\/p>\n<p>(10) Edmund Strudwick Burwell&#8230; b. 6 May 1848; d. 30 March 1887. Married Martha Wilkerson 1879. Est. wholesale grocery firm in Charlotte, NC<\/p>\n<p>(11) Virginia Isabella Burwell&#8230;b. 9 Sept 1851; d. 1 Nov 1867 at age 16 years. Buried in Charlotte, NC<\/p>\n<p>(12) Richard Spotswood Burwell&#8230;b. 8 July 1853; d. 6 Nov 1944 in Davidson, NC. Married (1) Marah Julia Blair (22 Oct 1884) (2) Blanch A. Franklin (6 May 1897). Presbyterian Minister<\/p>\n<p>My sources for this material came from the Hillsborough Historical Society, Inc. which did the research on this old school. Miss Alice Noble of Chapel Hill, NC owns the original student lists. A xerox copy hangs in the old Burwell School, which has been restored and is open for tours.<br \/>\nRev. and Mrs Burwell left Hillsborough, NC in October of 1857 to organize the Charlotte Female Institute, which later became Queens College in Charlotte, NC.<br \/>\nAfter Mrs Burwell died on 21 June 1871 in Raleigh, NC at the home of a daughter, Mrs W.H. Crow (Nan). the Rev. Burwell with his son, John Bott Burwell took a new position as new principals of Peace Institute in Raleigh, NC (now Peace College). Rev. Burwell retired from teaching in 1875. He died at the home of his daughter, Mrs Crow, on 5 March 1895. Mr John Bott Burwell continued as the Principle of Peace until about 1890.
