 Mortality Census

 

Mortality censuses were compiled at ten year intervals from 1840 until 1880.  Each census covered deaths occurring from June 1, 1879 thru May 31, 1880.  Because of the number of items of information for each individual (17 columns) we have left some of them out here to conserve space.  Two of the columns omitted are the father's place of birth and mother's place of birth.  In most cases the parents were born in the same state as the deceased.  Separate columns were used to denote whether single, married, widowed or divorced but we have lumped them together here under "Marital" and are using letters instead of typing out the whole word (s=single; m=married; d=divorced; w=widowed).  We also left out the column entitled "If disease was not contracted at place of death, then state the place."  The "Residence" column denotes how long the deceased was a resident of the county and if less than one year it is given in fractions, i.e. 3/12.
