BEAUTIFUL WEDDING – Miss Gertrude Rivenbark Became Bride of Prominent Young Business Man

Ms. Getrude RIVENBARK, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.T. RIVENBARK, of Williard, NC and Mr. Thos. G. COVINGTON, a leading young business man of Clio, SC, were happily united in marriage at the home of the bride’s parents, at Wiliard, yesterday at high noon, Rev. Dr. Calvin S. BLACKWELL, of this city, officiating.

Miss Zennie CROOM, of Burgaw, was maid of honor, and Mr. Baxter A. FLETCHER, of Clio, was best man.  Miss Exie CROOM, of Burgaw, charmingly rendered the wedding marches.  The following group of young ladies were bridesmaids: Miss Clara Lane WILLS, of McColl; Miss Katie VEACH of Warsaw; Miss Linda DOZIER, of Wilmington; Miss Mamie JOHNSON, of Williard; Miss Eveline POWERS, of Williard.  The ushers were: Mr. F.T. CROOM, of Burgaw;  Mr. Jas. M. JOHNSON, of Williard, Mr. Bernard A. EDENS, of Dillon, SC; Mr. John C. WIGGINS, of Wilmington; and Mr. R.J. RIVENBARK, of Darlington, SC.

The delightful occasion brought together a large company, among whom were Mr. J.C. COVINGTON, of Clio, Mr. C.C. RIVENBARK, of Sanford; Mr. J.W. RIVENBARK, of Wilmington; Miss Katie SHOLAR, of Wilmington; Mrs. Eva Forrester RIVENBARK, of Burgaw, and other members of the family and friends.

The bridesmaids and maids of honor were in white organdi.  The bride wore an elegant going-away gown of castor venetian cloth with velvet lining — Wilmingon Star Jan. 29th.

HUGHES, Thelma R. (1991)

Thelma R. Hughes, 80, of 310 Woodbine St., died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 1991, following a brief illness. She was the widow of Charlie Frank Hughes Sr.

Born in Burgaw, N.C. she was the daughter of the late Richard R. and Nora Brothers Rivenbark, and had been a resident of Hopewell most of her life. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and was preceded in death by her son, Charlie Frank Hughes Jr.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and Bill Andrews of Hopewell; nine grandchildren including Becky Lipscomb, Bonnie Barbini, Thomas Frazier and Marshall Andrews; 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Myra Shaw of Hopewell.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Gould Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Charlotte Andrews, 3410 Jackson Farm Road.

A service will be conducted by the Rev. John Crawford, pastor of Wesley United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Appomattox Cemetery.

Note:  Thelma Rivenbark, daughter of Richard Ray Rivenbark and Nora Brothers, was born 9 Jul 1910 in Burgaw.  Nora Brothers was the daughter of John (Jacob) Wesley Brothers and Joseph (Jodie) Catherine Dupree.  Richard Ray Rivenbark was the son of John Vann Rivenbark and Mary Catherine Bowden.  Richard is thought to have died in 1955 in the state of Virginia.  Nora Brothers Rivenbark is buried in the Burgaw Cemetery.

SHAW, Myra R. (1994)

Myra Rivenbark was the daughter of Richard Ray Rivenbark and Nora Brothers.  I am compiling the genealogy of the John (Jacob) Wesley Brothers and Joseph (Jodie) Catherine Dupree.  Nora Brothers, the mother of Myra Rivenbark, was their daughter.  Myra Rivenbark was also married to a W. C. Nelms.  Henry H. Shaw was Henry Hawthorne Shaw.  Would like to hear from members of the family. — Stephen Pearsall

Myra R. Shaw, 86, died at John Randolph Medical Center, thursday, Jan. 27, 1994, after a period of declining health. She was the widow of Henry H. Shaw.

Born on Nov. 23, 1907, in Burgaw, N.C., she was the daughter of Richard R. and Nora Brothers Rivenbark and had been a resident of Hopewell most of her life.

She was a member of the Pentecoastal Holiness Church in Hopewell.

Shaw is survived by her daughter, Dorothy N. Peters, of North East, Md.; son and daughter-in-law, Walter L. and Billie A. Nelms; and son, Myron Joseph Shaw, of Hopewell; three grandsons, five granddaughters; 4 great grandsons and two great granddaughters.

The family will receive friends on Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Gould Funeral Home.

A service will be conducted on Saturday at 2 p.m., in the funeral chapel by the Rev. Willie S. Cromer Jr., pastor of the First Baptist Church.

Interment will follow in Appomattox Cemetery.

RIVENBARK, Mary Lois (1977)

Miss Mary Lois Rivenbark, 69, of 3532 Granada, a 60-year Dallas resident, died Monday in a Terrell hospital.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Crown Hill Memorial Park.

A native of North Carolina she attended North Dallas High School and Southern Methodist University and was a member of Highland Park United Methodist Church.

L. W. Rivenbark Dies at His Home

Liston Wells Rivenbark, 62, of 3532 Granada, resident of Dallas for twenty-eight years, where he was a special agent for the Cotton Insurance Association, died at his home Friday.

He was a native of Burgaw, N. C., and lived in Washington, D. C., and Atlanta, Ga., before he came to Dallas in 1916. For the last year and a half he had been in failing health.

He was a member of the National Order of the Blue Goose, an insurance organization.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Rivenbark, and two daughters, Mrs. Clara Harper and Miss Mary Lois Rivenbark, all of Dallas.

Note: Liston Wells Rivenbark was born 25 Mar 1882 in Pender County, the son of David Wells Rivenbark and Penelope Eliza Gurganious. He died on 21 Apr 1944. His spouse’s name was Mary Lola Faust (died Dallas County, 14 May 1969) and his daughters were Mary Lois Rivenbark and Clara Rivenbark. Mary Lola Fuast was born about 1890 in North Carolina. Both of the children were born in North Carolina.

Clara Rivenbark, daughter of Liston Wells Rivenbark, is to be married on 26 Apr 1935 in Granada, Texas, to Dr. Jack Carnes Harper, son of Mr. and Mrs. B. J. Harper. Clara was a graduate of Southern Methodist University (SMU). Dr. Harper was also a graduate of SMU and a graduate of Baylor Medical College.

Appeal from superior court, Pender county; Timberlake, Judge.

Application by Margaret E. Heyer, administratrix of the estate of John C. Heyer, deceased, for leave to issue execution against D. W. Rivenbark. From a judgment affirming an order denying the application, complainant appeals. Reversed. Stevens, Beasley & Weeks, for appellant. J. T. Bland, for appellee.

CLARK, J. This was a motion, September 9, 1897, by an administrator, before the clerk, for leave to issue execution, upon notice served on defendant, based on an affidavit which sets out that on December 23, 1885, plaintiff’s intestate obtained a judgment against defendant before a justice of the peace for $148.73 and costs, and on the same day caused the same to be docketed in the office of the clerk of the superior court of Pender county, and that no part of said judgment has been paid, and that the whole thereof is still due. The record states the defendant “resisted the motion, and pleaded the statute of limitations in bar of the motion.” The clerk found the allegations of the affidavit to be true, and added a further finding that at the date of docketing the judgment the defendant “was, and is now, the owner of real estate situate in Pender county of value not exceeding $1,000, and no homestead has ever been assigned defendant.” The clerk denied the motion, which judgment was affirmed by the judge on appeal, and plaintiff appealed to this court.
