Lucas Dead &#8211;\u00a0Passed Away Suddenly, at His Home Friday Night<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>People of Burgaw and vicinity were shocked on Saturday morning to learn that <strong>Dr. Philip E. LUCAS<\/strong> had died suddenly at his home Friday night, his death occurring at about 12:20 o&#8217;clock.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. LUCAS<\/strong> had not been in the best of health for several weeks past, but no one thought for a moment that the hand of death would so soon be laid upon him, and none were prepared even in the slightest degree to receive the sad news. \u00a0<strong>Dr. LUCAS<\/strong> was about the streets, here and there, up until Thursday afternoon, and, as an matter of fact, but few knew that he was even indisposed.<\/p>\n<p>The deceased, while a \u00a0young man, had been quite prominent in the town and county. For the past two years he has held the position of county quarantine officer in connection with his other duties. \u00a0he enjoyed a wide practice and was held in the highest esteem by his wide circle of acquaintances, and his death brings a peculiar sorrow to them.<\/p>\n<p>He was a young man of great promise in his profession, just in prime of life. \u00a0His father was the late <strong>Dr. Geo. F. LUCAS<\/strong> of Currie, where the young man was born. \u00a0He married \u00a0June 4 of last year, <strong>Miss Elizabeth BRADFORD<\/strong> of Burgaw, and besides his wife is survived by his mother, <strong>Mrs. Bertha LUCAS<\/strong> of Currie, and three brothers and four sisters, as follows: Messrs. <strong>Jesse F. LUCAS<\/strong> and <strong>Geo. F. LUCAS<\/strong> of Currie and <strong>David LUCAS<\/strong> of Hopewell, Va., and <strong>Mesdames James THOMPSON<\/strong> of Lake Waccamaw; <strong>Seth SMITH<\/strong> of Whiteville; <strong>Guy DAVIS<\/strong> of Wilmington and <strong>Miss Annie LUCAS<\/strong> of Currie.<\/p>\n<p>The funeral services were held at his home here Sunday morning and were conducted by <strong>Rev. P.L. CLARK,<\/strong> of the Presbyterian church. \u00a0The remains were carried to Currie, the boyhood home of the deceased, for interment in the family plot. \u00a0A large concourse of friends accompanied the funeral party. \u00a0The floral tributes were large and beautiful and bore testimony to the esteem in which the deceased was held.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Source: Pender Chronicle, 18 April 1918, page 1.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Philip E.
