D In Moore Co on the 3d inst., Mr. K. SIMMONS, son of Bluford SIMMONS, aged 25 years.
D Petersburg Democrat: Man named STRICKNER arrested on the 25th inst., at Weldon, NC for shooting
a man at a cockfight in Nash Co. Confessed, but alleged he had good reason. Man shot died immediately.
D In this town on Sat last, Mr. Richard S. CAIN, late of the firm of COUNCIL, CAIN & Co.
D Cynthiana (Harrison Co) News of the 14th: On the 10th inst., Philip ROBERTS, aged about 90, one of
"Marion's Merry Men," died near this place. A soldier in the Marion War in SC & a soldier of the Cross in
the Methodist church over 60 years.
D In this county on the 17th after a long & lingering disease, Mr. Duncan McARTHUR, aged 69 years.
D N. C. Argus: Jonathan BAKER, sentenced at last Term of Superior Court of this county to be hanged on
the 1st instant & respited by the Governor until the 29th, was executed yesterday.
D At his residence near Big Rockfish in this county on Thurs morning, 28 Dec, Mr. Donald McGILVARY,
native of Sclate, Isle of Skye, Scotland, aged 82 years. Came to this town 1804 where he remained. MORE
I Wilmington Herald: Yesterday afternoon a pistol in hands of a son of C. H. DUDLEY, Esq., of this town,
a small boy, accidentally discharged and a severe but not dangerous wound was inflicted. Ball struck
neighborhood of left breast.

after a short illness.
D In Salisbury on the 27th ult., Col. Alexander W. BRANDON, aged about 60. Son of a Revolutionary
Soldier, himself in War of 1812, subsequently frequently member of the Legislature; long Chairman of
the Common School Board of Rowan.

M In this vicinity on Thurs evening, the 4th inst., by Rev. D. S. WILLIAMS, Mr. Ruffus JONES of Wake

D Col. Abner PARKER of Orange Co, highly respectable citizen aged 61, committed suicide on the 26th
ult., by cutting his throat with a razor. Had been afflicted by death of his wife and all his children by
consumption; further depressed by symptoms of apoplexy.
D Wilmington Herald: Cpt. Elijah BENSON of this county, while on his return home last evening with his
cart, about 2 miles from town on the Plankroad, was fired upon by an assassin and shot in the back part of
the head, ball coming out near the ear. Dragged into the woods, apparently beaten with a club; found last
night; brought to town, given medical attention, but his case is hopeless, not expected to survive the day.
No clue yet. Page 3 notice: Mr. BENSON waylaid near Wilmington has died of the wounds inflicted.

D In this county on Fri night last, after an illness of 10 days of pneumonia, John EVANS, Esq., in the 57th
year of his age. Formerly a merchant in Hamburg., SC, but returned to his native county, engaged in
agricultural pursuits.
D Old North State, 13th inst.: Last Tues in upper portion of Camden Co, William SAWYER, without vocation,
shot Henry BRAY, killing him almost instantly. Earlier SAWYER had beaten his wife; BRAY tried to stop him.
Both drunk. SAWYER escaped. MORE
D Of apoplexy in Raleigh on Thurs eve. last, Mrs. Caroline HINES, relict of the late Hon. Richard HINES.
D In Stevenston, Ayrshire, Scotland, on 20 Dec 1854, in her 70th year, Mrs. Marion BANKS, mother of
John, Charles, James and David BANKS, citizens of Wilmington & Fayetteville NC. On death of husband
in 1860, crossed Atlantic to visit for 12 months with her children. Returned to native land; buried in
Stevenston Kirk Yard, next to husband. Long obit
I Concord Gazette: A few days ago in lower part of our county, Cpt Nelson SLOUGH, an acting officer of
this town, having sundry warrants in hand against Wm. TETER, residing near Pioneer Mills, went down
on Fri last, taking Robert MORRISON, Esq., one of the Plaintiffs, with him. TETER shot him; 3 balls
shattered SLOUGH's right leg. Physician summoned, dressed wound; SLOUGH will probably lose leg;
now resting at Robert H. MORRISON's home. TETER still at large. MORE

D Salisbury papers mention destruction by fire of house of Mr. Micajah GRIFFIN of Salisbury; occurred
after midnight of the 19th inst. All occupants burned, injure; Mary PHILLIPS burned fatally.
D Hillsboro; Recorder: Week before last John STEWART of Chatham Co was found dead in his neighbor's field;
at a sale drunk, tried to ride home; apparently had been trying to open the fence to ride through when pole fell
on his head, killing him. MORE
D In Raleigh on Thurs last, Benjamin B. SMITH, Esq.
D Wilmington Herald: Rev. Cyrus JOHNSON, D.D. of Charlotte, died suddenly of apoplexy on Thur in an Omnibus
whilst going to the railroad depot; on his way to Fort Mills to perform a marriage. Second clergyman engaged for
this; Rev. A. S. WATTS, previously engaged, died on the day appointed for wedding.
D In De Soto Co, MS on the 29th ult., Joel JOYNER, Sr., formerly of Johnston Co NC, in the 64th year of his

D Salisbury Banner: We learn that Mr. Maxwell CHAMBERS, lately deceased, willed to Davidson College
$300,000. Also left $30,000 to the Presbyterian Church in this place. The Watchman, subsequently
received, says Davidson College bequest is $200,000.
D Col. Francis K. HUGER, distinguished gentleman of Charleston SC, formerly of the Army, died Wed last
in the 83rd year of his age. Made noble & daring effort to release Gen. LaFAYETTE from his
imprisonment in dungeon of Olmutz some 60 years ago.
M In Moore Co on the 6th inst., by Absalom KELLY, Esq., Mr. Samuel C. McAULEY to Miss Martha
THOMAS, daughter of the late Frederick THOMAS.

D Free colored man named Henry CHAVIS was killed near this town yesterday by a stab wound inflicted by
his wife; he said before he died it was done "in play." She has been committed to jail.
D North Carolinian: Wed evening, 28 Feb, in the upper part of the county in Barklaysville, Jacob JOHNSON shot
Jacob STEWART who died 15 minutes later. JOHNSON had visited STEWART's house earlier in the week, asked to stay
the night, was refused because he, JOHNSON, had disease. The night of the murder STEWART visited house of Mr.
Daniel STONE; JOHNSON later visited same place, renewed quarrel and shot STEWART. STEWART's age illegible, leaves
wife and 7 children. JOHNSON immediately arrested, committed to jail on Thurs.
D At Rocky Run, New Hanover Co, on Wed last, Mrs. Sarah Julia HILL, relict of the late Dr. Nathaniel HILL,
aged 63 years.
D In Salisbury on the 27th ult., at the residence of Mr. Thomas E. BROWN, Miss Mary FOSTER, aged
about 17 years, after an illness of only 4 days.
D In Raleigh on Fri, 24 Mar, of pneumonia, John D. POWELL, Esq., leaving a large family of orphan children.

D In Union Co on the 14th ult., Mr. Abel STACK, aged about 60; and on the 11th ult., Mr. Job ROGERS,
Sr., at a very advanced age.
D Patrick McGOWAN, traveling mail agent on the Raleigh & Gaston Railroad, was killed at Weldon a few
days ago by EVERETT [father & son} of Spring Hill, Halifax Co & PRICE who were arrested & committed
to jail. Almost 50 years old, has wife, 7 children in Raleigh. Onlookers wanted to lynch the 3. Dispute
over $1.08 EVERETT said McGOWAN owed him. Later accounts state McGOWAN not dead, may recover. MORE
D At Ashborough on the 3d inst., John B. STRONG, son of Maj John M. & Eliza STRONG, of Selma, AL,
aged 16 years 7 months. Funeral from the Episcopal Church this afternoon at 3:30.

D In Moore Co near Buffalo Church on the 1st inst., in the 46th year of her age, Mrs. Christian WICKER,
wife of D. W. WICKER, & dau. of R. & Catharine McINTOSH. Leaves husband, 3 children. Presbyterian for 30 yrs.
D In Duplin Co on the 13th ult., Mrs. Adeline E. KINNEAIR, consort of Thomas J. KINNEAIR, Esq., aged 44
years 4 months 16 days.

D At Shreveport, LA on 12 Jan, John W. BURTON, Esq., Attorney at Law, son of Alfred BURTON, Esq., of
Beattie's Ford, NC, aged 86.
F Gale of Fri last, woods for many miles around this town on fire; wind carried from plantation to
plantation. Summer residence of Mrs. HUSKE, negro house, large quantity of [---] 4 miles from town
entirely consumed. Summer residence of John W. SANDFORD, Esq., same neighborhood, with all
outhouses, etc. same; Residences of John D. ECCLES, Esq., Dr. [---] P. MALLETT, of Wm. S.
MALLETT, Esq., saved with great difficulty. Carriage house of David A. RAY, Esq. destroyed. Dwelling
& outhouses of Absalom DAVIS, Esq. [of Moore Co?] destroyed; DAVIS, who was ill, saved with difficulty.

I Mr. Moses EINSTEIN of Kinston NC blew up his store on the evening of the 11th inst., by unthoughtfully
placing a lighted cigar on a keg of powder. About fortnight previously he had effected insurance in the
Fayetteville Mutual Co for $2500. Injured much if not fatally.

of shot in thigh & hand; Mr. Jacob WESSEL wounded in legs; Mr. J. B. RUSSELL was shot in knee; Mr. Alex. MATHEWS in
the thigh; couple of Negroes peppered; glancing shot struck 2 other persons without damage. Injuries not considered
serious. Captains were at once arrested & committed to jail.

Christopher ROBBINS, commonly called "Kit ROBBINS" beat old Negro man, who came into his
possession by marriage, with whip until it wore out, then used an axe handle with which he also knocked
down his own wife, & finished the old Negro by pouring hot water in his ears. Left neighborhood on
morning of the 21st, starting in direction of Wilkesborough; believed he will try to escape by Railroad.

together with a quantity of Rosin & Spirit Barrels. Suppose to be work of an incendiary.
M Clarkesville Tobacco Plant: Long article. Squire John BRADSHER of Person Co NC, having been a
widower for a few months, became sadly oppressed with loneliness; in his 70th year; proposed to Miss
Franky LEE [also written LEA], 57, and possessor of $12,000. She accepted; 14 Jul to be wedding day.
Mr. Samuel JOHNSON, another widower, also 57, had been her sweetheart many years ago. Evening
before supposed she was to marry, JOHNSON wrote her if she preferred BRADSHER, she could have
him. She wrote back JOHNSON could marry her next morning at sunrise. JOHNSON got license, hired
preacher, married her. BRADSHER found note & resolved to sue.

by sulphuric fumes, called to be retrieved, fell out about halfway up. Norman ---old descended immediately &
was stupefied. Followed by DANGERFIELD[?] who also succumbed. James S. MORRISON, Engineer of the NC Railroad
was let down; John W. DeLANCIE, of this town & experienced Scotch miner, descended. MORRISON made one trip;
DeLANCIE made 3. David SULLIVAN accompanied him in 2d trip & John ----- went down and assisted. 3 unfortunate
were saved from untimely death; Messrs. ---- & ARMFIELD appeared but little bruised; WALTON received sever cut
on head.

D North Carolinian: Mon morning last about 6 miles from this place, little son of Mr. John K. GARDNER,
about 5 years old, was left in the house by his mother to attend a younger child while she did some out
door business; the children were playing near the fireplace; the young boy fell into the fire & was burned
to such an extent that he died in about 24 hours.
D Remains of William W. CARLILE of NC, a student of the medical department of the Pennsylvania
College, were interred Thurs at Philadelphia in Ronaldson's Cemetery; nearly all the students of
medicine in the city attended.
D Lt Archibald McRAE of the US Navy, native of Wilmington NC, committed suicide by a shot to the head in
a temporary fit of insanity on board the US Schr. Ewing, of which he was in command, in San Francisco
bay on the 28th ult., age 35. MORE

Sat, 8th inst, abut 2 o'clock near his residence in Chowan Co; said had large sum of money at time.
