AN OLD WAR RECORD
Source: The Marlboro Democrat, (Bennettsville, S.C.) 1882-1908, May 29, 1903, Image 2
A few days ago, Mr. Thos. A. Huckabee of Boykin, while examining some old papers which belonged to
his father Capt. Thomas W. Huckabee came across an old Company roll.
Captain Huckabee was Captain of the "Home Guard" or Sixth Militia and the Company was organized in 1863 and
known as "Post #2", Upper Battalion 30th Regiment South Carolina Malitia. This company was formed of men between
the ages of 40 and 50 years, and is in Capt. Huckabee's own hand-writing. Thinking that the publication of the names of
this old company might be interesting to some of your readers, I have therefore transcribed the following from the original
and ask you to publish same in the Democrat.
There are only two members of this company now living, viz, Messrs William Norton and Harris Pate, both now quite old.
The original roll gives the age, even months and days of each member, I will only give the years at time of enlistment in 1863.
