HISTORICAL TRIVIA Shared by Myrtle Bridges April 21, 2018
The farmer and mechanic. [volume] (Raleigh, N.C.), 11 Nov. 1880 Mr. Walter F.L. Steele and James T. LeGrand, Esq., were crossing Mountain Creek bridge near Grassy Islands, on Sunday last in a buggy, the bridge fell in, but fortunately they escaped without injury. The buggy was mashed up and the horse badly hurt, which we believe was all the damage that was sustained by the accident.
The semi-weekly messenger [volume] (Wilmington, N.C.), 15 March 1898 Several hundred shrubs and plants from the nurseries at Biltmore have arrived here, the gift of George Vanderbilt of the state. It is stated that all will be set out in the grounds of the executive mansion and none in the capitol square. Vanderbilt's gardener will supervise the work.
