It was a small log building located about one half mile south of the present location. Notes for DOCTOR FRANKLIN MORTON: Doctor Franklin Morton and Ella Amanda Hudson had made plans to be married at Arch Laton's home on Sunday, December 18 1904 with U.F. Hathcock magistrate, to perform the ceremony. Shortly after lunch, "Doc" and Addie his sister, went to Alexander Hatley's to get Ella in his buggie. After Doc and Ella and Addie left, Mr. Hatley got on his horse, went to Hamp Hudson's home to tell about the marriage. Mr. Hudson was not at home, but Mrs. Hudson told him that he was visiting Mr. Kerns...so Mr. Hatley went over to Mr. Kerns and there he gave his message to Mr. Hudson, then he returned home. Mr. Hudson got on his horse and went to Mr. Laton's home and just happened to ride up at the same time as Doc and Ella did, but from opposite directions. A small crowd had gathered for the ceremony and were waiting in the yard for the bride and groom to arrive. Mr. Hudson rode up to within about fifteen to twenty feet of the buggy and said, "I'll put a stop to some of this, I guess I will", and then to Ella he said, "Now Ella you get out of that buggy and git on that horse." Ella's reply, "I can walk". He said "git on this horse like I told you." She did and Mr. Hudson left for Mr. Kerns, then on home. Not to admit defeat and give up his love, Doc, with the help of others made new plans for the following Wednesday. On the pretext of returning a borrowed scrub mop to Alexander Hatley's, their neighbor, Ella did return the mop and continued on down the road toward the Morton place, where Martin (Mart) Dennis met her and escorted her to the Haskel barn, where he left her hidden in the woods near the barn. He (Mart) returned to the Morton home, he fired a shot, the agreed signal to Doc, that Ella waas waiting at the agreed place. Mart then took Addie (Doc's sister) to go wait with Ella in the woods until the others could get there, because Doc was watching in the fields or woods, near the Kerns home, because Ella visited themn quite frequently. Finally Doc arrived home, cleaned up and left with Mart from the Morton home. As soon as they were out of sight of the house, Mart went to the magistrate's home, U. F. Hathcock, who was to officiate and together they returned by buggy to the Haskel barn. There the ceremony was performed by moon light on Wednesday, December 21, 1904. Mr. Hathcock loaned Doc and Ella his buggy for their return to the Morton home that night. Mart returned the buggy for Doc. Ella had been told not to return home for anything if she ran away and so she had to wear some of Addie's clothes, until Doc could get to Albemarle to get some cloth. It was moved to the front porch, so people could visit him." "He fell out of a tobacco sled at his home and fractured his femur several months before death." Final address, Jackson Springs, NC RFD #1 Informant, Mrs. Tom Webb, Rockingham, NC John William Laton passed away at 5:30 AM at the home of his daughter Ester Webb in Rockingham. He was the oldest member of Taylor Memorial Baptist Church. Mr. J.C. McQueen was the pastor at that time. Services were at his home Saturday July 19, 1952 near Jackson Springs ( Derby ) on Sycamore Land. Hymns that were sung "The Old Rugged Cross," and "Shall we Gather at the River." LIVES THROUGH FIVE WARS, 16 GRNDSONS IN WW II The death of John W. Laton of near Jackson Springs a short time ago at the age of 92 marked the passing of an exceptional man in many ways. first one must be exceptional to live that length of time and retain enough of his physical and mental faculties not to be a burden to his people during the latter days of such a life. Another exceptional thing is brought to mind at his passing. He was the father of ten children. Six boys and four girls; of these five boys and three girls are still living. He has 45 grand children living and 5 dead; 85 great grand children living and five dead, and one great-great-grandchild. This is a total of 138 descendants. During WWII he had 16 grandsons in the service, of this number only one was killed and just two received wounds. The one killed was the son of A. R. Layton of Hoffman, the two wounded were sons of Mrs. Sarah Mauldin, of Rockingham. Mr. Layton (Laton) was a farmer all his life, and at the age of 88 he was still farming and was retired only because of an accidental fall which made him a cripple for the past 4 years. He was born a year before the outbreak of the Civil War, May, 1860, and died July 17th, 1952. He was a native of Stanly County, first married Pricilla Morton and moved to Richmond County in 1916. At the time of his death he was visiting his daughter Mrs. Tom Webb, in Rockingham. He was a deeply religious person, was a member of the Taylor Memorial Baptist Church. He was the last of his brothers and sisters to pass; six sisters and one brother. Being 6 years of age at the close of the War between the States, Mrs. Layton says he can well remember his father's return from that war, and he often remarked that in all he had witnessed five wars in his time. After the death of his first wife, he married Mrs. Ann Simmons, who survives him. Her was buried in the Layton family cemetery in Stanly county near his native home. The house and farm that John W. had in Richmond County went on the tax roll in 1867. it was 49 years old when he bought it. They moved in a covered wagon and had to camp out overnight before reaching their new home. Tom Webb and Ester Layton went to McNair School, a one-room school. mama walked two miles and Daddy five. Later Daddy's brother Uncle Leonard drove a wagon to the derby school. Grandma Webb would heat up bricks to put into the wagon bed to keep them warm. Daddy and his brothers worked in the cotton fields. When work was over they walked home, eat, and then went for a swim in Naked Creek. Mama and Daddy were married December 24, 1917 by Rev. Coppedge in Rockingham. Mama could really cook. She loved flowers and needlework. They always had a garden and mama would can what they harvested for the winter. A few years after their marriage, they moved to Richmond County near the Derby Farm area. Following numerous other moves to Moore County, Scotland County, he finally settled in Hoke County. This is where he and Mary lived until their deaths. George worked hard to feed and clothe his family, although poor he was quick to respond to the needs of other family members and neighbors. In his leisure time he enjoyed fishing in Drowning Creek. In his day, worked ended on Saturday at noon and resumed on Monday Morning. During the weekend George often took his kids fishing and swimming. On Sunday the mules were hitched to the wagon and the family went to church. They moved in a covered wagon and had to camp out overnight before reaching their new home. Mama and Daddy went to the McNair School, a one room school. Mama walked two miles, and Daddy, five. Later, Daddy's brother Uncle Leonard drove a wagon to the Derby School. Grandma Webb would heat up bricks to put in the wagon bed to keep them warm. Daddy and his brothers worked in the cotton fields. When work was over they walked home and ate, and then went for a swim in Naked Creek. Mama and Daddy were married December 24, 1917 by Rev. Coppedge in Rockingham. Mama could really cook. She loved flowers and needlework. They always had a garden and Mama would 'can' what they harvested for the winter. Daddy had a barbecue pit during World War II. There wasn't much lard at that time, so before Daddy could cook the meat, he would cut off the fat and cook it up for lard.
