Died: On the 13th inst., at his grandmother's in Richmond County, Duncan G. McGugan, Jan., in his
twenty-fifth year. He was a volunteer in Western Virginia, where no doubt he caught the disease that
terminated his life. He was an amiable, exemplary young man; he stood high in the estimation of those
who knew him.

Died: In this county, on the 6th inst., of organic disease of the heart, Richard Thomas, aged 60 years.
Obituary - Departed this life, on the evening of the 19th February, at the residence of her husband, Mr.
Augustine Shepherd, Mrs. Effie Shepherd, aged about 73 years. She had been "gathered to her fathers,
having the testimony of good conscience, in the communion of the Catholic Church, in the confidence of
a certain faith, in the comfort of a reasonable religious and holy hope, in favor with God, and in perfect
charity with the world." Mrs. Shepherd was the daughter of Mr. Duncan McLaurin, late of Richmond county.
She was born in Argyle Shire, Scotland, but was brought to this state in her infancy. She resided in
Fayetteville till her marriage in the year 1819, when she with her husband removed to Anson county, near
Wadesboro. She had been, at that time, for some years, a member of the Episcopal Church and was the first,
and for some time, the only member of that Church in Wadesboro. In 1820, when the place was first visited
by a missionary of the Church, she welcomed his coming with gladness and by her earnest, quiet and godly
conversation, aided him in establishing here the church of her love.

Drowned: We learn that Capt. Saml. P. CALDWELL, of Cabarrus county, was drowned in Coddle Creek, at Pitts'
Bridge, on Tuesday night the 12th inst. He was returning home from Concord, and from some cause unknown,
the buggy in which he was riding was thrown off the abutment of the bridge, and he [fell] into the water,
where he was found dead next morning. He was about 50 years of age, and leaves a wife and four children

We learn from the Chattanooga Rebel that Col. George B. Myers, 24th Mississippi Regiment, was killed,
near Atlanta, on Wednesday, the 28th ult. Col. Myers was born and raised in this county, and was a son
of Absalom Myers, formerly of this county, but now a citizen of Mississippi.

A little boy, son of Hardy DEPO, Esq., of this city, was accidentally shot on
yesterday morning and died a few hours afterwards. It appears that a young woman, named Calder, had the
gun in her hand and the little boy remarked to her to fire away, she had his permission. She fired, not
knowing the gun was loaded, the shot taking effect in his head. This is another instance added to the
many already given of the danger of trifling with fire-arms. Fayetteville Carolinian

With pain we announce the death of Col. J. W. Cameron. He died at his residence in Richmond county, on
Friday last, from an affection of the liver, in the fifty-second year of his age. [lengthy obituary]

State of North Carolina, Richmond County. Superior Court, Fall Term, A.D., 1869. Petition to make Real
Estate Assets. Lauchlin McNeill, Adm'r of Niell A. McNeill, dec'd, Plaintiff, vs. John McNeill, Mary
McNeill, Jas. McDonald, and wife Sarah A., and others, defendants. John McNeill is not a resident of
the State.
Terrible Death: Benjamin Saunders was killed, the other day, at the raising of a cotton press, on the
plantation of Mr. Solomon Townsend, of Richmond county. Our informant states that after the press was
raised to a considerable height it fell, some of the timbers striking Saunders on the shoulders and then,
as he fell, crushed his head, killing him instantly.
On Wednesday last, at about 2 o'clock, a fire broke out in a lumber kiln, near Mr. Bookshire's mills
at Pekin, Montgomery county, and it required great exertion to prevent its communicating to the mills.
About 2,000 feet of lumber, for the Saron church, Richmond county, were consumed. No other damages.

Mrs. Anna Elizabeth Ledbetter, wife of Col. Henry W. Ledbetter, and daughter of P. N. Stanback, Esq.,
was born in Richmond county, N.C., May 29, 1839; and died in Anson county, near Wadesboro, N. C.,

Lilesville, March 28 - An accident happened here to-day to Capt. Burr's train while on the down trip
from Charlotte, six miles east of Lilesville caused, by the breaking of a wheel in the rear truck under
the first-class coach. The car was thrown from the track, resulting in the fatal wounding of Harvey Lewis,
a colored brakeman, and severe injuries to J. W. Covington, of Rockingham, and Eli Gibson, of Old Hundred,
Richmond county. Reverend C.M. Pepper and Capt. Burr were in the coach but escaped unhurt. Mr. Covington
was injured in the thigh and hip, Mr. Gibson in the back, and the negro in the bowels and legs. The latter
was carried to Rockingham and died shortly after arriving there. Messrs. Covington and Gibson were
suffering considerable pain two hours afterwards, but the condition of neither is considered dangerous.

The little daughter of Mr. James W. Holt, of Richmond County, was severely burned last Saturday by her

Died in Guntown, Miss., at the residence of Mrs. K. D. Cole, at 8:46 o'clock, p. m., November 14th, 1884,
Mrs. Sarah McAlister, lacking but two days of being 92 years old, was the daughter of Marshall and Lydia
Hinson Diggs, and was born in Anson County, N. C., November 16th, 1792. She married Mr. George Haley,
February 28th, 1809, and removed to Richmond County, N. C. He died November 12th, 1818, leaving her a
widow with three little children. She was married the second time to Mr. John McAlister in 1819. He died
December 24th, 1848, leaving her with two daughters. She was thus the mother of five children, only two
of whom survive. She came to Mississippi in 1876, and resided with her daughter, Mrs. K. D. Cole, in
Guntown, member of the Methodist church for sixty eight or sixty nine years.

Thursday, February 4, 1886
Mt. Gilead: Solomon Haywood, near Troy had a Government Still, and three more stills were found on his
premises, which were blockades. Mr. David Munn was the clerk at the Government Still, and being found in
one of the blockades, was arrested and carried to Albemarle with the other prisoners. Mr. Solomon Haywood
the owner of these stills was absent and escaped being arrested. Mr. Munn is cripple and for whom a good
deal of sympathy is felt.
Mrs. Jennie LeGrand Crosland died, very suddenly, seated in a chair, at her home in Richmond county, on the

Mr. M. A. Marr a highly respected citizen of Wadesboro, died 14 of Oct. of paralysis.
Mr. George K. Little who has been lingering with consumption for some time died last Friday morning.
Bob Allison, a 12-year old colored boy of Richmond county, while returning from Wadesboro recently, drank

The Wadesboro Messenger says the barn of Mr. T. E. Diggs, in Wolf Pitt township, Richmond county, was
burned by an incendiary fire Thursday night, March 21st. In the stables were 13 mules and two horses.
Two of the mules were rescued from the burning building, but they are so badly burned it is thought they
will have to be killed. Eleven mules and the two horses were burned to death. There was also burned about
500 bushels of corn, 300 bushels of oats, a large quantity of hay and fodder and many farm tools and
implements. The loss is about $4,000; insurance $1,400. Source:The Landmark, Statesville, NC
