COLONEL E. SLOCUMB DIES ON THE 4TH OF JULY
Fayetteville Observer (Fayetteville, NC) Wednesday, July 22, 1840     Myrtle Bridges   November 23, 2009
Died on the 4th of July, instant, at his residence in Wayne County, Colonel E. Slocumb, aged about 85 years.
He was an officer in the War of Independence, and Lord Cornwallis quartered several days on his premises, when
passing through that part of the State. The old hero died on a glorious day. How many of the actors in those
scenes have departed to their final rest amidst the joyous acclamations of our National jubilee! Col. Slocumb was
for many years a member of our Legislature; a citizen without reproach, and an honest man. Wilmington Advertiser.
