A PHYSICIAN DROWNED IN RICHMOND COUNTY
News and Observer Observer (Raleigh, NC); March 30, 1884 Issue

Tuesday morning last the body of Dr. Whitfield Covington was found a short distance below Tony's ford,
on Little river, sunken in the water and lodged against a raft of bushes. The discovery made after a search
by neighborhood people since Sunday night last, at which time he mysteriously disappeared from the house of a
relative with whom he was spending the night. The supposition is that, in a fit of mental derangement, he had
wandered off to the river and fallen in and was drowned. He was a promising young physician of some 35 years
of age, and was a native of this county, but for a few years past had been living in Randolph, (county) in the
practice of his profession, whence he had come on last Sunday on a visit to his relative, whose house he left
on the night mentioned. Although a victim of insanity some years ago, he had recovered and enjoyed the confidence
and high esteem of the community in which he lived. (Rockingham Rocket)
