{"id":4,"date":"2011-11-22T23:50:34","date_gmt":"2011-11-23T04:50:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ncgenweb.us\/rockingham\/?page_id=4"},"modified":"2013-10-22T11:20:27","modified_gmt":"2013-10-22T15:20:27","slug":"welcome","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ncgenweb.us\/rockingham\/","title":{"rendered":"Welcome"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ncgenweb.us\/rockingham\/welcome\/200px-map_of_north_carolina_highlighting_rockingham_county-svg\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-749\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-749 alignleft\" alt=\"200px-Map_of_North_Carolina_highlighting_Rockingham_County.svg\" src=\"http:\/\/ncgenweb.us\/rockingham\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/200px-Map_of_North_Carolina_highlighting_Rockingham_County.svg_.png\" width=\"200\" height=\"76\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #b12010\">Rockingham NCGenWeb is not a part of Rockingham County government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Rockingham County, also called the North Star County, is bordered on the east by\u00a0Caswell County, on the west by\u00a0Stokes County, on the south by\u00a0Guilford County &#8212; and on the north by two counties in Virginia: Henry County to the northwest and Pittsylvania County to the northeast.\u00a0 Rockingham County&#8217;s area was part of Guilford County from 1771 to 1785.\u00a0 It was named after<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: medium\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_Watson-Wentworth,_2nd_Marquess_of_Rockingham\">Charles Watson-Wentworth<\/a><\/span>,<span style=\"color: #000000\"> who was the Second Marquis of Rockingham.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Rockingham County was established by a vote of the North Carolina General Assembly on December 29, 1785, from the northern half of what was Guilford County at the time &#8212; and what was the northern third of Original Guilford County, which gave up its southern third to create Randolph County in 1779.\u00a0 Early settlements arose in the Troublesome Creek valley.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nathanael_Greene\" target=\"_blank\">Nathanael Greene<\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000\">and his\u00a0soldiers stayed in this area before and after the<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Guilford_Court_House\">Battle of Guilford Courthouse<\/a>.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000\">George Washington also visited this site in an effort to rally these troops as they continued their fight in the Revolutionary War.\u00a0 Interestingly enough,<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Banastre_Tarleton\" target=\"_blank\">Banastre Tarleton<\/a>, <span style=\"color: #000000\">who was known for his unnecessary cruelty during the war, and his soldiers camped out in the very same location days after Greene&#8217;s army had moved on.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Leaksville and Wentworth are the two earliest towns in Rockingham County.\u00a0 Leaksville was established in 1795 and Wentworth,\u00a0the county seat, was established in 1799.\u00a0 Other towns include:<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ci.eden.nc.us\/\">Eden<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.townofmadison.org\/\">Madison<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mayodan,_North_Carolina\">Mayodan<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ci.reidsville.nc.us\/\">Reidsville<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.town.stoneville.nc.us\/\">Stoneville<\/a>.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #000000\">Other communities are: Huntsville, Shiloh, Bethany, Ruffin, and Monroeton. Waterways served as an important means of transportation throughout the county&#8217;s industrial period.\u00a0 As a result, many textile mills were located near rivers, including both the Dan and Haw Rivers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;color: #000000\">Once the Civil War approached, this county was initially very divided on whether or not to support the Union or the Confederates.\u00a0 Finally, a decision was made to secede on May 20, 1861.\u00a0 Rockingham County sent a total of 1,711 soldiers to the frontline and compensated each soldier and their family with $25,000.\u00a0 A portion of these soldiers participated in the battle of Gettysburg.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: small;color: #000000\"><em>(Information is from\u00a0Rockingham County:\u00a0 A Brief History by Lindley S.
